07/26/02 | Jolly Green

Posted on 07/25/2002 9:01:00 PM PDT by Jolly Green

Time Line
05/30/02 Thursday ~ Ricci returns to pick up his Jeep at the auto repair shop before the shop has a chance to fully fix it He tells the repairman that it needed for an emergency.
06/04/02 Tuesday ~ Ricci is at work from about 9am to 5:30pm
~ Ricci claims he spends the evening with friends
06/05/02 Wednesday ~ 1:05am - 2 cars are spotted on the SLC Shriner's Hospital Parking Lot by a hospital security guard, two blocks from the Smart residence
~ 1:30am (approx) - Elizabeth is kidnapped from her home
~ 1:30am - Ricci claims to be in bed asleep with his with wife.
~ Ricci is scheduled to be off work all day today.
~ 7:21am - Rachel/Amber alert is issued and national media is involved.
~ 8:30am - Ricci and his neighbor talk about the kidnapping of Elizabeth, Ricci seems to know too much information about it.
~ Sometime during this day Ricci is visited by police in regards to Elizabeth's kidnapping as reported by Angela Ricci (Richard A. Ricci's Wife which is an ex-convict herself)
~ Ricci is seen by his neighbor digging a hole by his (Ricci's) trailer early in the morning. (heard the neighbor say this on TV)
06/06/02 Thursday ~ Ricci is scheduled to work from 9am to 5:30pm today, but instead works from 10:30am to 7:00pm
~ Police talk to Ricci this day about the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping. (The media is reporting this, so it could be wrong)
06/08/02 Saturday ~ Ricci returns the Jeep to the repair shop to get it fixed. The Jeep is muddy and the repair shop owner sees Ricci remove seat covers from the back of the jeep and place them into a plastic garbage bag that already contains other stuff in it. Also the repair shop owner said a muddy post hole digger was in the back of the Jeep, Ricci removes this also. Ricci has a man waiting across the street to give him a ride. Ricci takes the plastic bag and contents along with the post hole digger with him. Also there is 500 to 1000 extra miles on the Jeep since Ricci picked it up on May 30th, 2002.
06/14/02 Friday ~ Ricci is taken into custody for a parole violation, this being the 2001 robbery of the Smart Home in which he admitted to.
Special thanks to Brigette for starting this timeline.

I'm taking lesson from... Well, once again, I've been married 34 years. I have not been a perfect man. I have made mistakes in my life. But out of respect for my family, out of a specific request by the family, it is best that I not get into the details of the relationship.

I have made mistakes in my life.

ROTFLMAO. That is too funny! Remember the look on his face when Connie Chung kept asking him the same question over and over and he kept giving the same answer over and over. Traficant's only friend in Congress. There are people lower than Ricci. Baden, one of the foresics guys working pro bono supposedly FOR the Levy family was on one of the talk shows the other day and confidently said they would solve the case, but he seemed to tip his hand that he believes the random sexual assualt theory. Well, in this case I'm looking forward to what Ed Smart will come up with next. See ya tomorrow!

With the Smart Family finally bring in Boylan without LE knowing it...

I don't think we know that LE wasn't aware that Boylan was coming in, do we?

maybe the neighbor is involved somehow with Ricci?

Very interesting and some good thinking, Brigette. I remember thinking all those times when the police spokesman said that a close associate or neighbor of the family might be involved that the emphasis seemed to be on neighbor. Something is preventing LE from revealing all they know. While I suspect the possibility and hope of finding Elizabeth alive is a primary motive, gathering the evidence to nail the perp is another. If a neighbor was involved, it may be difficult to prove b/c a number of the neighbors came over when word got out that Elizabeth was missing. I hope that you're onto something!

Come on now...don't drop this tidbit and leave. I followed the Sund/Pelosso case closely....

Is your family friend's with the Stayner's? The Merced paper had one of the best collection of articles on the Sund/Pelosso case at the time. Esp. after Cary was arrested and the connection was made to Steven's case.

The Stayner family was dysfunctinal at best, even before Steven was kidnapped I understand.

About the neighbor thing...Ed said for everyone to check their basements, remember that? Then there was talk about the basement room where the harps are stored, a lot of basement talk in the first week or so and then nothing else.

I wonder if he went to a neighbor's specifically to see if Elizabeth was hidden at a neighbor's? Was he thinking that at first?

I think LE has known since early who the kidnapper is and they haven't told Ed Smart.

Why would this be, though? Why would law enforcement be in an adversarial relationship with the victim's own father? Do you have a theory for this?

Thanks. I had forgotton that. It was one of the many facts of this case that made me wonder about the neighbors early on.

Spore-gasm, I'm hoping you'll remember this so I won't have to go look it up......but didn't the initial reports on this clearly state that the Smarts had hired Boylan? The first three paragraphs of this article are focussed on claims that it was the POLICE who brought her in. Any thoughts or info on this?

I think that may have been another myth propagated on FR. Brigette thought that was the case also, but I had no recollection of it and asked her last night (on this thread) why she and others thought the cops weren't in on it. Now we learn they were involved.

Oops ! I think I made a mistake in a post to Jolly on the other thread.(I wish there was only one thread to condend with).

I stated on there that Mr. Smart knew a year ago that Recci had stolen from them. Now I read your post, Bridette, and see he found out AFTER THE ABDUCTION, when Recci confessed to the stealing from the Smarts and the neighbors.

Thanks for clearing me up on that. My apologies to you, Jolly. I was wrong.

"Earlier Tuesday Ed Smart told The Associated Press that "we did have her come in, and we feel there's going to be a tremendous benefit out of what she's done. We've put everything in the police's hands."

It looks like you may be right, Jolly. After re-reading Boylan's interview with Katie Couric, I notice that she mentions the work of the SLCPD/FBI repeatedly, suggesting that perhaps she is involved on an official level. However, Ed Smart's statement above seems to suggest that he is taking at least partial credit for her involvement.

At the risk of incurring your wrath (yet again), I have to say that it's things like this that make Ed Smart look bad. This the third time that he has broken "news" about official developments by claiming personal knowledge or involvement (i.e., the mysterious letter, the disappearing e-mail, and now Boylan's work.) It just seems very strange to me.

Boylan stated to Couric that the SLCPD and FBI have gotton the results of her visit, but she didn't state that they knew she had been taken into the home to meet with Mary Catherine.

But then, the swift anchorette didn't ask the question any of us would have !!

Here's what I found on Fox News:

Earlier Tuesday Ed Smart told The Associated Press that "we did have her come in, and we feel there's going to be a tremendous benefit out of what she's done. We've put everything in the police's hands."

It sounded like he is saying the family brought her in and when she finished, the family placed averything in the police hands.

Substituting "family" for "we" in both places that's the way I read it.

If you substitute "police and family" for "we", then the second "we" wouldn't make sense.

There were three neighbors (according to the media) who were unavailable (translation: out of town?) when fingerprints were taken on July 1. No word if they returned and/or if their prints were recorded

If they didn't return to have them taken, and weren't persued by SLCPD to do so....there is a "clue" right there. It isn't needed.

Just a thought.....not a fact.
