LOS ANGELES (AP) - In the 23 years since Iran's Islamic revolution, emigres who made Los Angeles their capital in the West have braved interrogations and detentions to visit the families they left behind.

The chance to see loved ones was always worth the risk and the hassle, but that narrow portal between East and West is now in jeopardy of being slammed shut.

Hong Kong Action Start Jackie Chan to Star in "Around the World" remake


LOS ANGELES -- Hong Kong action film hero Jackie Chan is to star in a Hollywood remake of the classic globe-trotting adventure ***"Around the World in Eighty Days,"*** the studio said Tuesday.

Martial arts stunt star Chan, 48 -- who made his name in Tinseltown on such pictures as ***"Rush Hour"*** with Chris Tucker and ***"Shanghai Noon"*** with Owen Wilson, says he is looking forward to becoming Jules Verne's classic hero, AFP reported.

"I am extremely excited about making a new version of ***'Around the World in Eighty Days***,'" Chan said in a statement issued by producers Paramount Pictures.

"This movie will provide me an opportunity to do many things I have never done before on film. It will certainly be a lot of fun to make," added the star of a string of Hong Kong films who is fast becoming a global phenomenon. The latest screen adaptation of the story of English gentleman Phileas Fogg and his motley band of cohorts is to be directed by Frank Coraci, who directed Adam Sandler's pictures ***"The Wedding Singer"*** and ***"The Waterboy***."

Chan will play Passepartout, a wily thief who is taken in by nobleman and inventor Fogg to help him complete his voyage in the allotted time in order to win a wager.

Paramount Chairman Sherry Lansing said the studio had acquired the U.S. domestic distribution rights for the film, while summit entertainment was selling the international rights.

The last celluloid version of the story was shot in 1956 by Elizabeth Taylor's onetime husband Mike Todd and starred British actor David Niven as Phileas Fogg and Mexican-born comic Cantinflas as Passepartout.

I have met people in Southern California, originally from Iran, including Jews, Bahais, Christians, Zoroastrians and Muslims.

I liked most, and have optimism the country will someday turn to the civilized west, as was the case under the late Shah. Yes, he had a brutal police force, but now that we've had firsthand experience with the many joys of the middle-east, it's less difficult to understand what he was up against.

Many of the folks over here fled the Islamic Revolution, not the Shah. I don't mean those who left during the Shahs time favored him, or that they opposed him.
