CONSERVATIVES TURN ON ASHCROFT
Tue Jul 23 2002 20:58:38 ET
Many religious conservatives who were instrumental in pressing President Bush to appoint John Ashcroft as attorney general -- now say they have become deeply troubled by his actions, the NEW YORK TIMES is planning to report in a blistering Page One spread on Wednesday.
"His religious base is now quite troubled by what he's done," Grover Norquist tells the TIMES's Neil Lewis.
MORE
Several Bush advisers have begun complaining that Ashcroft has projected himself too often and too forcefully. More significantly, they say privately that he seems to be overstating the evidence of terrorist threats, the paper claims.
Conservtives cite Ashcroft's anti-terrorist positions as enhancing the kind of government power that they instinctively oppose.
Norquist: "If there hadn't been this big government problem, Ashcroft would have been talked about as the Bush successor. Instead, the talk is that 'too bad we pushed for him."'
Ashcroft was also criticized by some in the administration for declaring early on that the case of John Walker Lindh was a major terrorist case, the paper reports. Some officials in the Justice Department believed that the attorney general made needlessly harsh public comments about Lindh. The case came to an abrupt end last week, when Lindh pleaded guilty to two felonies and the department dropped the most severe terrorism-related charges against him, treating him as a far less important figure than depicted by the attorney general.

I must be having a senior moment, but I don't really understand how race entered into this. The actor I was thinking of looks Caucasion to me, but irrespective of that, the race card simply didn't cross my mind. Beyond that, I will let my entire body of posts stand as to this charge or any other. I know it is hubris, but I am reasonably proud of them.

I'll leave you and your fellow Ashcroft fans to keep the torches lit. Good night.

Dear Grover Norquist, Know your role & shut your hole. Especially to the NYT. Norquist is a Arab arse-kissing piece of excrement. He is a traitor by aiding and abetting our Saudi enemy. He should be shunned by every right-thinking patriotic Conservative.

I forgot the smiley face after he used the Welsh slander. No one has a sense of humor here.
To: Fred Mertz
I notice you didn't respond re: Reagan and HIS politics. Bringing up fawning over Bush is irrelevant to my post.

Are Celts Caucasion? You don't need to answer that. My Dad claimed he had Welsh ancestry. That has not been verified, but his middle name was Wyatt, a Welsh name, so it cannot be totally discounted. I should have asked him if he thought he was related to that other Welshman, Thomas Jefferson, since his paternal forebears came from the same state. But at the time I didn't know Jefferson was Welsh.

I don't think Neighborhood Watch can come into your house and snitch you up. TIPS puts a publicly acceptable face onto such behavior (similar to the FBI suggesting that they be allowed to torture people). Changes the public's perception and makes such behavior an acceptable practice believing it's a sign of patriotism. This loyalty to the state disguised as patriotism has been the hallmark of just about every despotic regime there has been.

PC hypersensitivity seems to be extant in this neighborhood. LOL.

Oh, I don't know, Ashcroft's behavior seems to have divided people on FR.
To: Pokey78
Well...I believe this one. Any true conservative would be very opposed to what John is doing. Which is further proff that the current mind set on FR overall is clueless. It seems like we have been taken over by a bunch of fascist's. That is because every big government-socialist-fascist-Anti Constitutional thing that is pushed by these guys is cheered loudly on FR now. I am glad to know that many of the conservative's else where still have a clue. It is our only hope to preserve anything that even resembles the country founded by our fore fathers.

If you turn dubya loose with this today because you like and trust him then tomorrow it's gonna go to someone else. I try to not take such a pessimistic view of my neighbors. America pulled together during WWII and endured rationing and neighborhood watch wardens, and enforced blackouts just fine, or so the history so purports since they are no more.

Given that this is coming out in the NY Slimes, I suspect it is a hit job. The Slimes is trying to set the agenda. Yes. Divide and conquer. Just like their phony "polls". Create an issue, do a "poll" (or do an "interview"), cite the poll (or interview) as "news". Mission accomplished. Repeat as necessary. Goebbels would certainly approve.

The New York Times: take a little truth and twist it into lies.

At least he allows you the right to have gun in your home to defend yourself. Er, the Constitution prevents the Government from interfering with this inalienable right. If Ascroft interfered, he would be impeachable. IMO.

<< using private citizens to spy on Americans and spying on places of worship>> Hey buddy. I love this idea. If you're not an Islamic Fundamentalist what you got to worry about? You have no idea about the seriousness of these radicals and how they wish to annilalate us.

and none of these actions were forced upon him by the NYTimes. He was probably acting in the interests of, if not by order of, "New Tone" Bush, for better or worse.
To: Jhoffa_
in case you haven't noticed I am on quite a lot of threads giving him kudos also.
Sorry... bash once, forever branded.

>I want to believe we'll be okay, but I really don't see that in the cards. I'm the eternal pessimist even if I want the best for this country. I'm getting ready to leave it while I can. I'll come back when the cleansing is complete. I really want to come and go as I please and be left alone, that's not asking too much is it? I'm not able to do so here anymore.Amen. Good is pretty well content to live and let live and co-exist with evil, however, evil will always hunt down good to kill it. Just ask the Jews.
