Intel Readies Earlier Rollout of 3.0 Ghz Pentium 4

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Intel Corp. is moving up the introduction of its Pentium 4 processor running at 3.0 gigahertz, an industry source said on Monday, as the world's largest chipmaker looks to tap the benefits of efficiencies in its chip manufacturing.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel, the world's No. 1 chip maker, now plans to have the processor to PC makers in time for the year-end holiday shopping season, the source said.

Intel had planned to introduce the 3.0 gigahertz Pentium 4 processor, the brains of a personal computer, by the end of the year. In additional, Intel also is accelerating the introduction of its Pentium 4 running at 2.80 gigahertz, bringing that product rollout to the third quarter, compared with a prior introduction date in the fourth quarter.

When Intel introduces new chips, it typically drops prices on the Pentium and Celeron processors it already has on the market. The accelerated introductions also put Intel farther ahead of its rival, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., in terms of the clock speed of its processors.

By the of the current, third quarter, Intel will be selling a Pentium 4 chip running at 2.8 gigahertz, compared with 1.8 gigahertz for AMD, with its Athlon processors.

Maybe we should short the chip maker's stocks. What comes after 3 MHz, and how many people will actually care?

Of course, I thought my P2 rocked when I first got it to replace my 486. Who knows? Maybe they will have computers that will actually do your work for you (I thought that's what they were supposed to do to begin with?).

I'm surprised serious computer users don't use it more often. The drives move way faster than normal IDE.

Maybe SCSI-3 LV.
I would go with Firewire for a desktop. It is faster and you can use the card for other fun stuff like scanners and Digital camcorders.

Not as true as it once was.

The main advantage of SCSI these days is that they work much better with multiple instruction sequences at once (whereas EIDE requires the instruction to complete before releasing the bus, making the situation even worse when you have two drives on one cable). Remember that it's the same physical drive behind the interface.

In any case the AMD clawhammer just smokes (no pun intended). I know someone with a prerelease version clocked at 600MHz and it cleans a 2GHz Pentium 4s clock. Wider bus into memory seems the most likely explanation.

I meant the actual computing speed in launching and operating Windows and basic software. In other words do we really get more for the extra processor speed on the latest Pentium IV chip?

Well it's a good thing I just bought a 1.6 Ghz laptop just a few week ago. Just in time for them to lower the prices again.

You raise a very good point.

I was promising myself a new PowerBook G4 if I complete this quarter in the black with my new business. Now I'm not so sure that this is a good idea. If Intel is pushing the 3Ghz processors, all other processors are going to drop significantly in price. So I could have a monster Dell 2Ghz laptop for far less than what the PowerBook will go for. Couple that with Apple's plan to port OS X to the PC, why bother with the PowerBook?

I just lept up to 1.6 from 400 mhz in my new laptop. It's so fast I have to chain it to the table. I'm afraid to walk past it in the dark if I know it's on. And I rally had trouble with XP in the transition, but it's OK now. This thing is really great using high speed cable too.

Pushing the 3Ghz threshold. Cool, but not overwhelming unless this 3Ghz processor will be 64-bit.

They can crank up the CPU speed all they want but storage is still slow in comparison. And for some applications storage is the big latency bottleneck. And will continue to be until something new comes along and storage runs as fast as the CPU.

Not that I'm complaining. We basically have desktop Crays right now. Which is good because most PC are running Micrsofts bloated OS's.

Sorry that spots taken by my Tandy. Worked last year when I turned it on. It sports a dualspeed 4-8Mhz processor. Now if only I can get a reliable ISP that will work with my 1200 baud modem.

Yeah, I've thought about that. It's fine for my DSL. But it's not so good for the 56K modem.
