There's a difference between disagreement of policies that our nation implements, and an actual dislike of the very foundations of this nation. Bruce Springsteen disagrees with policies. Everything I've seen by Earle shows a contempt and dislike of everything this country stands for. Anyone who is self-described as 'to the left of Mao' by their own definition hates this country, not just it's policies.

I've yet to see anything except this article that even implies that Earle supports what Walker/Lindh did.

Anybody (IMO) who would write AND publish this BS (POST 9/!!) is a freaking moron. Sorry, but there is NO 'Point of View' Bullsh!t arguements that can be made to support this crap.

This country is too soft on these bullshit ideals. Yeah some of those freakin' Dirtbag Hippies in the 60's had some wonderful points of view also, doesn't mean their POV's were worth anything!

Why am I not surprised? Thanks for mentioning that.

The modern musician, actor, performer will do anything to further a career and agents, djs, tabloid media and schlock tv, will happily play along. It is the sign of our time and symptomatic of our degredation.

Even in our day there are some things people cannot do. Although it seems that some of the things that are allowed are worse than what is allowed. For instance the white rapper Eminem raps about killing his wife and cutting her up into pieces, and the media pretends its a controversy but they play his stuff and promote it. If, however, Eminem were to go the John Rocker route, or rap about how much he hates black people his stuff would go off the air immediately and his label would drop him like a bad habit.

Even in today's world Earle has gone too far. He will not be played on the radio, stores will not carry his album, people will no buy it online. Maybe he will have some success in other parts of the world, but not in this country.

Be interesting to see: I'll bet Earle gets places in national media that Charlie Daniels and Toby Keith were excluded from because of their ANTI-moham songs.

Fans are everything in music. Charlie Daniels and Toby Keith didn't offend their fans, Earle did, he will not sell, unless a lot of folk at Berkeler start listening to country music.

Was he once a patriotic musician?

Some of his music seemed to be, way back when!

This song has obvious Christian references? Why would a traitor sing a song like this?

Don't think he was one then!

He has a also recorded a song by well known leftist Bob Dylan.

I used to like Dyaln too, back then I was a little bit leftist! Hated the Vietnam Conflict but never had one bad feeling about those that did chose to serve!

I saw the Fox & Friends broadcast and they totally misrepresented the context of the song and the author. As a matter of fact, a few callers totally nailed them on their bais and out-of-context reporting. (Fair and Balanced my ass)

I sure hope that you are right! I haven't destroyed my Steve Earle CD's yet!

I have been waiting to see the actual lyrics before flaming Earle completely!

"many predict it will be banned from the majority of radio playlists when it is released in late September. "

It will probably make NPR, Pacifica, some lefty college stations. Do those kinds of stations pay the music royalties to broadcast?

Hey Earle, shoot up some more smack!

Those of us who have followed his politics know better...

I know that he is against the death penalty and that he covered a song about avoiding the draft, but back then I didn't completely disagree with those that chose not to fight in an undeclared war in a foreign land.

Any other politics that I may have missed? I haven't seen him in years and the Hard Way was the last CD that I bought. (1990)

Lots of recording artists have written songs dealing with less than desirable characters without ever expressing support for the beliefs held by the subject.

You do have a point. There have been songs about Billy The Kid, Young thieves on the run, indian massacres from both sides, murderers, robbers, drug runners and probably others too, and some of them DID SUPPORT the beliefs in the songs!

None of these crimes rise ot the level of being a traitor, but depending on the song and the message it portrays, I am still hoping that you are correct about this whole thing!

THERE YOU GO! All the hippies were dirtbag freaks and all the soldiers that went to Nam were baby killers!

Then do you know any reason he sang such a song. It is pretty rare for a non-Christian to create something original such as this.
