Vanity....Allegations regarding the Elizabeth Smart Case.

Posted on 07/19/2002 10:08:49 PM PDT by Partisan Hack

I have been relatively active on some of the boards regarding the Elizabeth Smart case. As such, I have received numerous e-mails. This one came in just a little while ago. I am providing it for your consideration and comment.

Church or no church I believe ANY parent would have dialed 911 before anything, not run around the neighborhood and calling bishops and all. I realize Mormons are deeply into all this formality but it's their child. Call them after. But before?

Also, there's the matter of all the "people" in the home before the police arrive. I cannot believe that one of those people didn't say.. Wait.. we shouldn't be here now.

Then there's the matter of a kidnapper knowing exactly where the child's bedroom is. I know 14 is not a child, but it is to me. The kidnapper had to pass the parents bedroom not once but twice. Then he allowed her to put her sneakers/shoes on. Would you waste that precious time?

Then there's the matter of the 9 year old waiting two hours before notifying the parents. Tell me, did she really look at the clock? I doubt it. Apparently she was going to the parents room but saw the kidnapper in the house. Where did she see the kidnapper for the second time? Why did he linger in the house with his victim?

We have not heard of anything being taken from the home as in a burglary.. where are the fingerprints? We don't even know if there are any. How did the perp enter the home? If the doors were locked he either had a key or the door was unlocked. I find an unlocked door hard to believe. What was the exit route?

Now as for the child, the 9 year old seeing the perp. She can see he's wearing a "polo" shirt, that he was wearing a jacket, she can see hair on his hands, a hat all this while pretending to be asleep. But no composite? Why wasn't that done?

I have also read that she was in fact questioned by the authorities three times and each time in the presence of her mother.

Any and all information that the public has been fed was contradicted after the fact. Mr Smart himself can not answer a straight question because he doesnt want to jeopardize the case. But yet he goes on a Press Conf. and tells us about a letter that was recieved. A letter the police were, at the time, unaware of. A letter that Uncle Tom FAXED to the police department and today we hear about an E-mail he "accidently" deleted. Again, the police knew nothing.

Now you can laugh about the Enquirer being a rag magazine but they have no fear of anything especially law suits and have, believe it or not, award winning journalists working for them. This alleged "gay" porn found on the Smart computers.. this collection of supposed sexual perversion would destroy them in the Mormon community if proven to be true. When Mr Smart was questioned on it, his answer was not something a "normal" person would say, (in my opinion anyway).

Instead, he said something like.. it's irrelevant or nothing to be concerned with. Someone else might say "that's absurd" or "yeah, so what. I had porn on my computer. Who cares!"

It seems to me that this whole ordeal is either a total sham for money or notoriety or he knows exactly where his daughter is and always has but it's gone beyond his control and now has to play his own game.

In my own opinion, and I stress this as I have no solid proof to back it up, I think this child is alive and now with one of the other wives. I think Smart got himself into severe financial trouble or he was being blackmailed because of his sexual preferences.

These are just a few thoughts of mine so tear it apart if you will but these are my opinions and thanks for asking.

That's right, he did say intimately....that was a very strange choice of words.

Not really, considering how every word out of his mouth is disected, analyzed and regurgitated.

To be precise, he said "not intimately". A brief stint on this or previous threads on this case will indicate to you just how every word can be distorted and maligned by those with an agenda.

No every one acts different, and have their own way of dealing with it. When my son was killed, I did'nt want any one around, just leave me alone. I suppose if he had been kidnapped they would have thought I was wierd also.
I think we should all remember, Judge not least you be judged.

No, he hasn't gotten over it. And the family is still searching for their daughter. The Smarts also have five other children, who need some sort of a normal family life. I'm willing to give the Smarts a break here, their daughter was abducted, and just because they don't show grief the way some people want them to, doesn't make them unfeeling parents or the perps. What, is Ed Supposed to drag along the media with him as he searches for his daughter in the mountains of Utah? How do we know he hasn't been out looking for her?

I am so sorry about your son. I didn't mean to lecture you, it is just that I have stated some of this stuff to other posters, in fact some of the same posters here, ad nauseum.

I know, but it's all we can do here is pick everything apart. It's our job.

If I were in the area, I'd be looking for her.

Now THAT'S a devastated dad.

Did you know (or care) that Ed Smart had a breakdown and was hospitalized the day after the abduction. I think your harping on the fact that his reactions don't match your expectations is just sick.

No father or mother coping with a similar situation would handle it well, though all differently.

I think the look-of-devastation factor is a real tool for investigators. Nothing to base this on, just gut feelings. Again, look at the famous cases over the past several years.

I had an incident where we couldn't find our 7 year old. The panic that you feel is immediate and uncontrollable. It was a beautiful day, everyone was out of doors. Everyone felt the same panic, and everyone started an immediate search. One of the neighbors immediatly took the responsibility of calling 911 and informed everyone that that part was being done while they went on searching. The first thing I did was run through the house and search it, yelling his name as I went. Then I jumped in the car and raced through the neighborhood doing a street to street search.

Luckily it all turned out fine. The little darling had gone into the house, exhausted, buried himself under a pile of laundry in the living room and went to sleep. He didn't hear me yelling for him in the house.

I just can't imagine not looking panicky (sp?), devastated, etc., especially if you have been searching for hours on end, or if hours had gone by prior to realizing the kid was missing. Think of the search time lost in that case.

Again, just an observation.

I think Ed has been more and more effective, especially in the last couple of weeks. I think he had a lot of confidence in LE early on and he's learned he's going to have to win his own ball game. I think you'll see some marked changes in his strategy shortly, like hiring a good PI from outside the Utah area. Too bad Mark Fuhrman has such a bad reputation, he's really a talented detective.

I didn't say they were the perps. I, like others here, say things just don't seem to add up.

NOONE is a suspect.

NO evidence is credible.

I'd hire Mark Furhman in a heartbeat. He's got a good rep, well, except that he used racial expletives years ago. He's an excellent investigator...

You did'nt, thats ok. But when I stopped and thought about it, I knew the way I felt, people would have thought it was'nt the right way to act. I guess we all have our way of dealing with death, stress, worry and the worst, not knowing. I would have been a mental case, but then I am any way. lol

All the more reason for him to be searching.

Where have you been? The search for Elizabeth Smart has been the largest search of its kind ever organized in this country. The command center is at the church near their home (you know the one Bella doesn't think should be used for press conferences) manned by volunteers coordinating with large numbers of people in the field. He is right in the middle of that. And you think he could better spend his time wandering around in a field? That is ridiculous.

I don't mean anything against Utah by saying he should hire someone that's an outsider. I said the same thing about the Levy parents. I like Billy Martin, but I think you need someone that's not going to feel the pressure of local politics or have to worry about being considered a 'team player' in the future.

After reading through all of this, and thinking about this particular thread (press conference part of it), I agree with you. After the first few press conferences, when everything was in a panic, I can understand moving to a better venue. There's no doubt that the first week or so would have everything happening at the house. After that, press conferences are usually called by the family or the police when information of relevance is brought forth. The press is called to attend the conference where ever it may be held.
No big deal that I can see either.

And if/when they find her it will be in the last place they look.

And again, I ask you, what the heck is wrong with having the press conferences at the church? Is it because it is the Mormon church, or a religious institution?

This is Just Another Bella Tangent - JABT for short. If you don't have facts, try to divert attention.

I don't think anyone here really has any facts. Just speculation.
