Gun-safety programs meant to teach youngsters to avoid risky exploration of the weaponry don't work, according to a report released today that calls instead for stricter gun-sale and product safety laws.
"Children, Youth and Gun Violence," from the nonprofit David and Lucile Packard Foundation, says that in experimental research settings youngsters who've been through "gun-avoidance" programs are just as likely as others to find and play with guns.

It is far more realistic to gun proof your child than to child proof every gun in the universe that he/she may stumble upon.
This, of course, would mean firearms education rather government sponsored fear mongering.

No doubt.
Millions of kids DON'T get hurt playing with guns every day. Somebody must have taught them something right.
IMO, letting a kid hear a gunshot without hearing protection, letting them see what a gun does and letting them handle them under supervision is the best way to cure curiosity.

Consider the source. The pervassive liberalism at the "Red"Star and Tribune is legendary. Their perceptions of Minnesota, and how life should be there, are one of the reasons I moved to Texas.

from the nonprofit David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Of course you smell an agenda. Check 'em out on the WWWeb. Where there's stink, there's rotting fish.

The rate of accidents with firearms has been in a downward trend for decades, this "report" is bogus.

The "non-profit Packard Foundation" is one of the largest pro-Socialist organizations in the world and single-handedly funds a large number of "studies" for the ACLU, as long as they march in lock-step with Lefties. In particular, they fund the ACLU going after anyone who promotes gun safety or pro-life/pro-abortion issues.

I think the excellent result of the California Hunter Safety Program rips this liberal POS agenda to shreds.
Some one should contact the Hunter Safety Program for their results over the past few decades before the results disappear.
My sons made me more gun safety conscious after they attended these hunter safety courses.

I smell an agenda at work. Of course, that's why they call it the RED Star Tribune

Lanier Dunn was 17 and Erik Dunn, 16, when they were shot in the basement of a North Minneapolis house.Too bad these boys didn't have a gun handy. And the requisite training, of course.

20,000 youngsters are killed or injured by guns every year in this country Goebels would be proud of the Packards. FR readers know that the 20,000 number is driven by 19 year old gang-bangers capping each other in drive-by-shootings.
The Eddie Eagle program didn't work for them!

The fourth-largest foundation in the United States, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, continues in 2001 to solidify its position as a
foremost backer of the pro-abortion agenda in the United States and around the world.
In 2000, the Packard Foundation lavished $122.7 million of $614 million total grants on projects in the field of "population." This included a $10 million gift to the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) Foundation for its Choice for America campaign. The Packard Foundation's population grants to date in 2001 again support a "who's who" list of pro- abortion organizations, including Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation.

And they are worried about kids dying from guns?

"Children, Youth and Gun Violence," from the nonprofit David and Lucile Packard Foundation, says that in experimental research settings youngsters who've been through "gun-avoidance" programs are just as likely as others to find and play with guns.Anyone notice the name of the program that doesn't work? "gun-avoidance"
Don't teach them to "avoid" guns. Teach them to "respect" and know how to "use" a gun.
To: wallcrawlr
No info on methods, questions, who asked what to which focus groups ... etc.
I can "say" anything (particularly if given funding and and an audiance that demands a particular answer ....) but the "study" is meaningless until we know what they did ...
... and exactly HOW they did it.

". . . talking about "right" from "wrong" is not effective."
Guns are the least of the problems these folks need to worry about.

which says 20,000 youngsters are killed or injured by guns every year in this country
85% of these YOUNGSTERS are Gang Bangers and no safety training is relevant
