EUGENE (AP) -- The only abortion clinic between Salem and the California border has closed its doors, surprising activists on both sides of the abortion debate.
Workers at the All Women's Health Services clinic, located near the University of Oregon, were referring callers Tuesday to the nonprofit's Portland office.
The staff oversaw 1,400 surgical abortions last year, services that helped make Lane County the second-largest abortion provider in the state.
"I can only celebrate," said Gayle Atteberry, head of Oregon Right to Life said. "Fewer unborn children will be killed."
The closure comes at a time when abortion access is shrinking across the nation. According to The Alan Guttmacher Institute in New York, the number of medical staff offering surgical abortions declined 14 percent between 1992 and 1996. Meanwhile, 86 percent of all U.S. counties lack abortion providers.
"There's a constant threat of violence, legal harassment, legislative restrictions," said Vicki Saporta, president of the National Abortion Federation. "So this is a lot more challenging than running a dentist's office."

I guess those in Eugene will have to get their BABY BURGERS elsewhere!

I love hearing good news!

Ms. Saporta, pray tell, what could possibly be more violent than an abortion clinic?
Listening to the rhetoric, one'd think that violence against abortionists and their "clinics" is some kind of epidemic.
How many clinics have been bombed since Roe? How many abortionists have been killed since Roe?

"There's a constant threat of violence, legal harassment, legislative restrictions," said Vicki Saporta, president of the National Abortion Federation. "So this is a lot more challenging than running a dentist's office." True enough, Vicki. For example, I'm pretty sure most dentists don't have nightmares in which the teeth they've pulled ask, "Why did you kill me?"

Don't celebrate too quickly. Sacred Heart, the PeaceHealth hospital near this clinic is relocating to Springfield, Oregon just east of Eugene.
Many health related businesses and services are relocating as well. If I hear more about what is happening in this story, I'll let you know as I am in Eugene.

This is amazing! Gayle Atteberry works tirelessly for Oregon Right to Life. She has to be positively ecstatic. I know I am...

In Ann Arbor one of the death camps has suffered wonderfully under the "siege" of compassionate pro-life truth-tellers.
It has to do with relentless and simple presence outside of the death camp - armed with prayer, love, and literature that exposes the truth about tha particualr "clinic" and "doctor", as well as about abortion and its health risks ans gruesomeness, as well as offering a wide variaety of assistance.
- Key employees have resigned.
- The landlord is not renewing the lease.
- The "doctor" has been exposed to the local community as a convicted felon who spent time in federal prison - and who is responsible for ripping a woman's intestines apart (employees find it hard to wrk with someone like that).
- Many women turn away or call up afterwards telling us that they changed their minds because of us - and of course we help plug them in to the help netowrk.
- Much of it has to do with having young women - just like them - and even children present on the sidewalk. What could be less intimidating?

"I can only celebrate," said Gayle Atteberry, head of Oregon Right to Life said. "Fewer unborn children will be killed." Doubtful. They'll just go somewhere else. This closing did nothing to change the hearts and minds of those who want an abortion.
