Well, I don't know if I'd go that far. Certainly, the vigilance committees did help to address the problem of the breakdown of law and order at a time when there was a handful of police (30 men in 1849) to patrol a booming population of rough men.

It is interesting to note, however, that the S.F. vigilance committee went so far as to provide advocates to defend Charles Cora and James Casey in front of a jury (made up of vigilance committee) members.

I suppose as the saying goes: extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.

This happened in Stockton... and my best friend's dental office is the closest business to the event... not more than a block away.

Three year old Jamal Bryce has 3rd degree burn over 95 percent of his body and his mother, Michelle Bridge over 90% of her body. The two were burned by a molotov cocktail thrown by Thomas Douglas Mason. They are looking for his brother Chauncey Lee Mason.

The criminals were targeting someone who had just left the apartment complex.

I keep my dentist buddy's computers working and eat lunch in the area several times a week. I just saw the pictures of mother and child and realized I saw them in the Jack in the Box restaraunt at Hammer Lane and Tamoshanter just last week. She is a good looking young black woman (21) and Jamal was a cute little boy with dreadlocks. I even spoke to him!

Stockton. A nephew of a person I work with was murdered in Stockton in '94 or '95. There was a gang war going on, between two gangs at rival high schools on opposite sides of town. One gang apparently targeted a random individual on the sidewalk outside the rival high school.
