Steve Largent recently threw his hat into the ring, running in the OK Governor race. I have read a number of opinions of him on FR over the past couple of years, some of which were perplexing to me. He seems to be an honest man, and a good candidate. My husband and I are considering who we will support, and are also considering getting involved in the election via campaign volunteering, etc. Before making a decision regarding Mr. Largent, I'd like to know if anyone here has any opinions and/or facts they would share with me about his time as a Congressman. Many thanks.

I know that he and Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania made the strongest efforts to ban partial birth abortion.

Steve Largent is the best thing that could happen to this State as Governor. He is Conservative, a family man, and someone I will work to elect.
As for richardson -- he had campaign advertisements on TV after 9/11 as to why he should be OK Governor and I found it distasteful that he would advertise then. He is no conservative and his idea to end all taxes leaves the State broke. He doesn't even have his facts straight about the Tax on the turnpike!
The RATS are beneath contempt IMO!
My opinion is to vote for the one Conservative in the race -- Steve Largent.

I don't know enough about Largent to inform your opinion but I can affirm what little you have said of him. Seems like a good man. (Which is an enormous achievment for a politician.

I have heard nothing but good things about Steve Largent, A very conservative former Arizona Congressman who served with Steve speaks very highly of him.

Everyone knew he was conservative while he was playing football in Seattle. However, even in the People's Republic of Seattle, everyone loved him.

Please beware the experience of Virginians last fall. The (d) candidate for governer ran on a stratagy of being more conservative than the (R). We are in the 7th month with this jerk, and needless to say, many voters are sorry they fell for the ads. When Carnahan's aide tells you,"She voted 71% with Bush.", you should be asking questions about the 29% that she voted against. Conservatives are known by their actions, not by some quoted statistics on their voting record. This is skewed in any number of ways. Look for the important votes, for that will tell you more than any aide's off the cuff remark on how many political appointees she voted for.
Be well...

It is remarkable, and not at all coincidental, that pro athletes who enter politics are almost always conservatives.
An athlete knows that you can't litigate the ball into giving you a hit or a catch. An athlete knows that preferential treatment by race, sex or ethnic background sets no records and breaks no finish-line tape. An athlete knows that he's out there alone -- even in team sports. His commitment and performance as an individual will make him or break him, and nothing else will matter. Even if he fools management for awhile, his teammates will know if he's dogging it, and they'll make sure management wises up in a hurry.
So far, the only exception I know of to the "athlete-politician == conservative" rule is Bill Bradley. But then, he wasn't all that great a basketball player, having achieved his high status in that predominantly black sport by being a moderately good white player, at a time when the NBA was frantic about the acceptability of a sport that seemed destined to be dominated by blacks.
Steve Largent is definitely worth a close look. He seems to be the real thing.

I will work up a thread about Largent to post on here to give his background shortly.

Steve Largent is a great man. He is a true believer when it comes to conservative issues. He is a fiscal, religious, and constitutional conservative.
I wouldn't ask freepers for advice on him. There are too many purists here who would call him a liberal over a single minor disagreement. (You must agree with them 100% of the time or you're a liberal rat.)
My advice is to go to the American Conservative Union (www.conservative.org) and check out his voting record. Go to(or write to) the National Right to Life, NRA, GOA. See what they have to say about his record in Congress.

You are so right about some Freepers feelings about the next Governor of Oklahoma, Steve Largent. The vast majority of them are not even from OK either!
To: Sci Fi Guy
Thanks, I'll do that.
