[history]
WASHINGTON -- Republican Ray Clatworthy raised about 50 percent more during the last quarter than longtime incumbent Democratic Sen. Joe Biden in the 2002 race for the U.S. Senate.
The report prompted Republicans to declare Delaware's nationally ignored race a potential "sleeper."

Delaware has a long history of returning incumbents to office. In the last election, Sen. Carper and Rep. Castle won with about 70% of the vote.
In his last campaign against Mr. Clatworthy, Sen. Biden took 60% of the vote (not a typical 70%). While Sen. Biden had a solid win against Mr. Clatworthy's 38%, Mr. Clatworthy did very well for someone who had never run for office, and had a 1% name recognition at the start of the campaign.

"Delaware has a long history of returning incumbents to office." Sure didn't work with Roth, and he had the "Roth IRA" working for him which was one of the best things to come out of DC in a long time.
I love the optimism and I say go for it, but unseating Biden will probably be as easy as unseating Kerry or Rockefeller.

Kerry has no GOP opponent. I think he's the safest of the three.

Everything you say here is correct xpcept for one slight error. Carper wa the outgoing Governor and unseated long time US Senator Bill Roth. The most devastating political upset in Delaware since biden unseated the long time incumbent in 1972.

Especially since most people don't even realize there's such a party as the Libertarian Party. : )

Sen. Roth was defeated by another incumbent (then-Governor Tom Carper, former 5-term Congressman). Sen. Roth, while attempting to look vigorous in camoaigning, unfortunately fainted/collapsed with the cameras rolling -- twice. Many would like the very-popular Congressman Mike Castle (also former governor) to run against Sen. Biden.

Yeah, Roth biggest opponent in that race was his advanced age. Hated to see him go out like that. I marched with Ray in our local 4th of July parade. His name recognition is much better this time around. I would love to see him knock off Xerox man
