Methodist minister is removed from pulpit

LINCOLN - The United Methodist Church minister who viewed pornography on the Internet is being reassigned to an administrative job in McCook, Neb.
The Rev. Randy Sailors told his congregation at St. Mark United Methodist Church last month that he downloaded and looked at porn. His assignment at St. Mark has been under review by church leaders since Monday.
Nebraska Bishop Rhymes Moncure Jr. and his Cabinet made the decision to relieve Sailors of his prominent pulpit at the state's largest United Methodist congregation. Shirley Jeambey, the bishop's administrative secretary, said Thursday that Moncure made the decision late Wednesday.
Earlier this week, Moncure called the downloading of pornography an accident and an isolated incident in Sailors' ministry. Moncure was not available for comment Thursday.
Sailors will join Moncure's Cabinet in September as one of eight district superintendents of the Nebraska Conference of the United Methodist Church. He will replace the Rev. Glenn Loy.
The Southwest District, based in McCook, includes 53 United Methodist churches. It includes the communities of Arapahoe, Cambridge, Curtis, Imperial, North Platte, Minden, Red Cloud and Superior.
A district superintendent oversees the administration of churches in the region on behalf of the bishop's office. The superintendent plans conferences and has pastoral duties. Jeambey described the job as a "pastor to pastors."
Late Wednesday, a letter updating the congregation on the developments was prepared for mailing to St. Mark's parishioners. The contents of the letter were approved by the Rev. Ed Bonneau, the Lincoln District superintendent.
The Rev. Dan Safarik, a pastor at St. Mark, said church leaders were treating the situation with care.
"Randy was certainly a good person," Safarik said. "I enjoyed working with him. I'm sure it's very disturbing to a lot of people because he's had a lot of people who've been enriched by his ministry."
Sailors has acknowledged that he downloaded and looked at porn after an e-mail link popped up on the computer screen in his church office about a year ago. He is undergoing counseling.
Jeambey said Sailors is on vacation and on leave from his position as senior pastor at St. Mark.
She said the bishop's Cabinet planned to begin the process of finding a replacement for Sailors next week. A letter from the bishop's office explaining the process will be read to the St. Mark congregation Sunday.
Sailors led Faith-Westwood United Methodist in Omaha before taking the senior pastorship at St. Mark in December 2000. The southeast Lincoln church is the largest United Methodist congregation in Nebraska, with about 4,000 members.
By the way, what's Jesse Jackson doing these days?
Sorry Rev. Sailors, it didnt hold water with my boss and it looks like it didnt with yours either.
BTW- arguing that theres such a thing as Mission Critical Pornography is a dead end too.

Guns Before Butter.
Barnacle Bill bump.

This sounds like the Simpsons gag where Ned Flanders calls up the Reverend in the middle of the night every time he catches second-hand smoke or gets exited by a Coppertone commercial. Everybody involved needs to find some real problems to get upset about.
Download porn and get a promotion in the church?!? Exactly which arm of the Methodist faith is this?
Sounds like a promotion to me. Just the kind of person other Pastors can look up to. Movin' on up!

Do you find something wisible about the name Wandy Sailows?
"Sailor tricks" bump
The tired one? No offense to Methodists, but I just couldn't pass it up.....
Great, McCook Ne, about 30 miles from where I grew up.
Of course this is about normal for the liberal branch, (is there a conservative branch?) of the Methodist Church. Went to the Methodist Church one time with my parents, the sermon was about the evils of guns.
Glad to have found a healthy well balanced church were I live.
Semper Fi!
C'mon! Are we expected to believe this is his REAL name? It's his "Disco" or "Club" name, isn't it? No hetrosexual man on earth would allow himself to be called "Randy Sailors". Sounds too much like a "wanted to buy or rent" advertisment in a San Francisco paper.
