My browser, IE 6.0, displays a caret, "^", at the end of every thread title on the "http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/browse" page.
TOPICS: Free Republic
KEYWORDS: bugsbunny; caretsthreads

I don't see them after the title, only after the source on those posts which are new articles.
It's wierd, but doesn't bother me enough to ask "wotsup".
(BTW, I'm using Mozilla for my browser.)

The zirconium engagement ring I bought my ex-wife didn't display any carats.
I hope she lurks.

What do all the function keys at the top of my keyboard do? - I am afraid to push them.Hey man, whatever you do when you get depressed DON'T press the END key. Just put your hands down and slowly back away from the keyboard and seek professional help.

Shouldn't you have asked, "What's up, Doc?"
Actually my house is pawt of a development built on a cawwot farm in 1967. We are still overrun with wabbits. Be vewwy careful when you mow. (They build shallow nests full of bunnies in the lawn.)

I get the same effect (also using IE, version 5.1 for Mac). I also wonder why.
By the way, are you as puzzled as I am regarding why everyone jumped on you for asking this (completely fair) question? Sheesh. You try to make the website better/smoother, and that's the thanks you get, eh?

Then we are gonna show up at algor's house and ask him what's wrong.

I fully expected it, and wouldn't have bothered to post otherwise. The carets don't bother me much, but I knew I'd get a flood of good-natured wisecracks, which I thoroughly enjoy.

I don't want to spoil the party, but I very quickly got the following Freep-mail:
What's With the Carets (^) at the End of Every Thread Title?

It means that thread will open in a new window. It's very good when you're chatting on several different threads at the same time. It can be set to this in your preferences. I hope this helps and you don't take too much abuse on this thread. You know about FReepers sense of humor, I'm sure.

"Why does hot water freeze faster than cold water?" Like Cecil says:
Dear Cecil:
Which boils faster--hot (or very hot) water or cold water? --Jane H., formerly of Chicago, now of Washington, D.C.
P.S.: You must have seen this one coming!
Cecil replies:
I resigned myself to it long ago, buttercup. As any sane and decent person would expect, hot water out of the tap will boil faster than cold water out of the tap. However, water that has been boiled once and allowed to cool will boil faster than hot water out of the tap. That's because boiling gets rid of the dissolved oxygen usually found in water, making it easier for the water to boil the second time around. There's money in this somewhere, I'm sure of it.
