I got raked by a momma mockingbird's bill while gardening. Right across the nose. I was too close to the nest. The bird swooped down from the eave of my house faster than a speeding bullet, I kid you not, zoom!
Till the babies hatched, I did my morning gardening around that tree holding an umbrella. We freepers are clever, hah!

The English variety of herrring gull appears to be much more aggressive than those I've encountered here.
On a trip to the UK a coule of years ago; my husband & I were walking along a harbor on the coast of Cornwall. A woman nearby was eating an ice cream cone when a gull came swooping in and stole the cone right out of her hand.
We decided to stand under an awning to eat our ice cream just in case the robber returned to the scene of his crime.

Heh. Where I come from, we'd just pop a couple of them with a 12gauge and hang them up on a pole. Usually made the others kinda get the message that it wasn't a good area to live.

The English variety of herrring gull appears to be much more aggressive than those I've encountered here. They're smart birds. If they're protected, they'll get uppity. The English are insane for allowing the little pests to breed - inland seagulls will destroy anything like fishing waters, for example. Not only as predators, but they tend to contaminate a waterway with parasites and all kind of nastyness.
Of course, the "better class" of Englishman will usually swarm to fishing waters outside of England for their sport. Another kind of parasite infestation :).
