UNC Chapel Hill REQUIRED Summer Reading Program: Approaching the Qur'an
The University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) ^ | May 29, 2002

Posted on 07/05/2002 7:30:41 PM PDT by lwd

The Carolina Summer Reading Program is designed as part of new students' orientation to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. All incoming First Year and Transfer Students are required to participate this year by reading Approaching the Qur'án: The Early Revelations, translated and introduced by Michael Sells, and by participating in discussion sessions on August 19. The program is designed to prepare students for some of their first-year courses and to stimulate conversation inside and outside the classroom about social issues facing all of us today as we enter the new millennium. It is important to note that this assignment will be incorporated into many first year courses.

On Monday, August 19th, from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., students are required to contribute to small group discussions led by selected faculty and staff. This is an opportunity for you to connect with members of Carolina's learning community and to share a common academic experience with your new peers. Students will learn more about preparing for these discussions during their summer orientation.

Probably a good idea. Get them when they're early and show them the evils of this religion before their brains are filled full of pro-PLO ideas from their liberal professors.

Why do I suspect that the point of these courses will be to indoctrinate students that Islam is the greatest of all religions because it is truly "the religion of peace"?

I don't understand. The Bible or anything to do with God cannot be discussed because of the separation between church and state nonsense but the Qur'an is a must reading. We are allowing our country to be hijacked by the leftist fools inch by inch. Complacency is our enemy. We need to stop this now.

lol. I'm sure that's what their plan is. For me, it's more about the double standard that's applied.

Somehow I doubt the people who agreed with removing the pledge from the classroom have a problem with taxpayer funded schools teaching about the koran.

From the Amazon Reviews this guy sounds totally PC ("In English, he says, God in the Qur'an sounds angry, whereas in Arabic, God in the Qur'an sounds sad and compassionate.") from apparent non-Muslims, and trivializing by Muslims ("I consider to read this book as a waste of time for religious study. Quran is viewed as a piece of poetry. ") The average review is 4/5 but that is because space cadets ("Michael Sells said that whenever he's in Damascus, he sits on his rooftop at night and listens to the chanting of love poems drifing toward him from other rooftops, from all directions. Some of that chanting is because Arabic love poems have been around for millennia. But some of that chanting is practicing for the chanting of the poetry of the Qur'an.") give it a five.

UNC would be better off recommending non-Muslim Bat Yeor's The Dhimmi or Muslim Ibn Warraq's Why I am not a Muslim.

This is a travesty. Sells book covers only the early years of Mohammed, before he turns to jihad and killing to push his religion. Michael Sells is an extreme left wing ideolog, here are just a few of his ravings:

The GOP Right, the Belgrade Lobby, and the Neo-Confederacy: Multiple Connections

Here Sells defends Islam and slams Christianity AFTER the 9/11 terrorists event:

The Interlinked Factors of a Tragedy Michael Sells Thoughts in Progress / incomplete / but still . . .

The link above includes this gem:

...but Timothy McVeigh was almost never (and never to my knowledge) called a Christian terrorist, even though he was living out a fantasy of the Christian Identity movement ...

A total lie. McVeigh was an agnostic, not part of any "Christian Identity" movements, as is well documented.

Sells defends Bosnian Muslims and bashes Christianity in general here:

Mutt America, The Religio-Racist Right, and Genocide in the Balkans
