Weaning Them Off Soda/Maine
The Bangor Daily News ^ | 5 July 2002 | who knows!

Posted on 07/05/2002 6:25:02 AM PDT by SheLion

A group of dedicated health specialists met again this week to fine-tune its plan to encourage every school in Maine to get rid of sodas, chips and other non-nutritional items.

They have put together an information packet warning against soda and chips as major causes of a current epidemic of obesity and tooth decay throughout the country but especially in Maine. The packet includes research articles and fact sheets designed to persuade students, parents, teachers and school administrators that the campaign is one tangible, practical means of improving health and heading off future disease. The committee has met with vending machine companies and obtained assurances of cooperation.

The next step will be to develop a strategy presentation for individual school districts. Pilot projects in several Maine communities are scheduled to start March 1, 2003, After evaluation of the results, the statewide campaign is slated for the school year starting in September 2004.

One question that arose in this week’s meeting was how best to get the students to realize that it is up to them to control their own diet and escape from the vending-machine monopolies in many schools that promote consumption of the big-name drinks that are heavy on sugar and caffeine.

A nutritionist suggested permitting a choice between healthful and unhealthful items. Others believe that, if given a choice, many students will take the junk.

Another question is how the vending companies may respond to the campaign. Milk and plain water must be carefully defined or some vendor may come up with a pricey new variation. How about Coke-flavored milk?

The committee is preparing for the day when it will seek wider publicity. It is drafting model news stories and news releases. One suggestion, unanimously approved, was that they drop the technical term “dental caries” in their fact sheets and refer simply to plain old “tooth decay.” That was a step in the right direction.

I'll pass on everything you say to our administrator. I'm not qualified to evaluate it. Perhaps you've made some suggestions which we haven't thought of. Thanks. I'll keep you informed.

"We're talking about trying to give kids a decent start in life."

In that case we should remove them from government run public schools. You rail against pornography and drugs but that is where most kids get their introduction to both.

"Keep going"

Make an argument or shut up. You just want a little unmerited attention.

I think I hear your mommy calling you to dinner.

"If the health care system is breaking down."

If the health care system is breaking down, then why is the average life span in this country increasing? I'll tell you why. Better food production and major advances in medical science. Not the results you would get in socialist and third world countrys.

What do you propose to do about it?

1)Stop selling junk food in the public schools.
2)Keep educating people as to the dangers of junk foods. I have no illusions about this. I know lots of people who smoke. None of them are fools. Everyone of them is aware of the risks and possible consequences. But that's real freedom. A lot better than the days of "Doctor-tested cigarrettes".
3)When we have a clear and definite idea of the dangers of particular foods force manufacturers to post warnings on their products.
4)As much as possible force people to pay for the consequences of their indulgences. For example, smokers should get no tax-payer help for treating emphysema. Similarly for drunks, drug addicts, and AIDS patients who have a history of promiscuous sex.
5)Fixing the health care system is beyond me. I'm working on it. See posts 195-205 5)

Shutting down government run schools creates a whole new set of problems. You tackle them if you want to.

Or perhaps you think that private schools don't turn out problem kids.

You're a G-d d-----d, spoiled-brat, rude idiot. You don't come up with a single new argument. Just rehash stuff that's been argued-over and answered numerous times...and I'm supposed to stop everything and waste my time answering you because you're too lazy or too stupid to think for yourself.

You want answers? Read the posts. You might even find a question and answer you hadn't thought of. But I doubt it since you don't think.

I seem to have struck a nerve. Most, if not all, liberals resort to profanity when they lack an argument.

Look at the posts #208 and lower, typical statist swine, I wish I could be a commie and know what is best for everyone. I have two adult kids and I pray that any advice that I give them helps.

If you're satisfied with your own answers why bother posting? Are you really such a know-it-all? Surprise me. Say something other than "Liberals know nothing. I don't have to listen to you to know you have nothing to say."

Besides - as I said in the previous post to you - this question has already been asked and answered.

This was what you call your argument

I think I hear your mommy calling you to dinner.

You got the reply you deserved - and that's all you'll get.

What are you talking about?

I'm a volunteer director of a local hospital. I'm not a medical specialist. Our hospital is in trouble. Our community is in trouble. I've outlined the problems. At the moment we're muddling through - looking for ways to keep our hospital from closing and our community from dying. No one has any answers. In a situation like that you look for help and advice in whatever area seems profitable.

So what's your problem? You see communists under all our beds and in all our closets just dying to steal your money and essential bodily fluids?

Such as all the problems that existed before there were public schools.
Such as the turmoil and opposition you'll stir up if you try something so radical.

Why do you need me to answer such a stupid question? Why can't you do it yourself?

Ever hear of depressions? Business cycles? Wars? Long-term trends are one-thing. Real life for real people living today is another.

Are you one of those who think that our civilization is going under because of increasing communist influence? If so, why is it so hard to believe that our health-system might not be suffering the same fate? In fact if the argument were put that way I'll bet you'd be the first to agree. Come on. Have courage. Be honest and admit it.

If not. Then look at it this way. The health care system is undergoing radical change. Emergency rooms are closing. Hospitals are closing. Lots of ordinary people can no longer afford the medical care that they could in the '60s and '70s. It takes awhile for stuff like that to show up in the statistics. Maybe we'll have figured out how to deal with it before it does.

It's simple. If you stopped trying to prove that all Liberals are idiots and actually listened to the arguments you might learn something.
