Almost seven in 10 Americans say they approve of the job Laura Bush is doing, suggesting her popularity has grown in the last year, says a new poll.
The poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press indicates that only 8 percent have a negative impression of her. Approval for Laura Bush has grown from 58 percent in July 2001 to 69 percent last month. The poll of 1,212 adults was taken June 19-23 and has an error margin of 3.5 percentage points.
Among the poll's other findings:
_When people were asked what one word best describes their impression of Laura Bush, they were most likely to mention "nice," "intelligent" and "classy."
_Two-thirds of the public approved of the job Hillary Rodham Clinton ( news - web sites) was doing as first lady in November 2000, but three in 10 disapproved. In 1996, people were about evenly divided about Clinton.
_More than three-fourths, 77 percent, approved of the job done by Barbara Bush as first lady in April 1992.
_When people were asked which of the last four wives of presidents came closest to their idea of what a first lady should be, Clinton was first with very heavy support from Democrats, Barbara Bush was second and Laura Bush and Nancy Reagan were tied for third.

I frankly have little interest in whatever pet program a First Lady is promoting. However, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush have always conducted themselves with class. They are nice and they are ladies. Concepts that I fear may be old hat in our current culture.

And just think of how high Mrs. Bush's numbers might be if she lived her life with that as it's goal? Laura Bush's interest in childhood education is a lifelong interest, it wasn't a scheme hatched by spinmeisters. And it's charming, I think, that it dovetails so nicely with Barbara Bush's Literacy Program.
Mrs. Bush quietly visited the families of the people who died in the 9-11 Pennsylvania plane crash. She has called the Smart family, she visited (or called) Marianne Pearl while she was in Europe, and of course, we have no idea how many other quiet and sincere gestures she has made to other groups and individuals. She seems to me, a most gracious lady, and in such stark contrast to Hillary.
God bless America, and God bless Laura Bush.

I was in no way denigrating Laura Bush's worthy pursuits--just that she is worthy of admiration for simply being a lovely person. I liked Barbara Bush but really admire Laura.

What's not to like? Of course, this thread is tarnished now because of photo of "the Thing" has polluted it now.
