Duffy Blume was fishing in the north fork of Campbell Creek on Sunday evening, several hundred yards south of the Alaska Botanical Garden in Far North Bicentennial Park, when he heard a grunt and a growl in the brush across the creek to his left.

All the more reason to stay armed at all times. Sometimes you get a reminder that we aren't always at the top of the food chain.

Just remember, from the Grizzly's perspective you're trampling through his "pantry" like a hunger crazed college student at home for the weekend. There's apt to be trouble and you best be armed adequately to avoid being the main course.

Bear warning

In light of the rising frequency of serious incidents between humans and black bears, the Alaskan Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for black bears while in the field.

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing as a warning, so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of a close encounter with a bear. Additionally, it is a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should also be able to recognize the difference between the black bear and its more ferocious cousin, the grizzly bear:

While the tracks for the two species of bear are quite similar, the black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. On the other hand, the grizzly bear dung has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

A few years back a pal of mine asked to borrow a rifle from me suitable for bears, as he thought his .243 was a bit light for the job. Unfortubnately, *military caliber* rifles were prohibited in the corner of Mexico to which he was headed, and nothing else I had was really suitable. I fized him up with the best available ammo for his rifle, and suggested he take along a shotgun loaded with slug for campsite protection, and one of the *bear extinguishers* for backup, which he did.

A couple of weeks later he was returned and took me out for a pizza, and told me the story of how he got his bear. Had the 243 bullets done the job, I wondered....

Nope. He nailed Mr. bear with the shotgun. How far off, I asked... *How long is a pickup truck,* he replied....

He wondered whether he had woken the bear or whether it was on a moose kill or a fish.

I am to assume that no mooses/meese were injured in this story?

In the journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition, Clark describes the first of several encounters with a grizzly. The Corps of Discovery shot it nine times with .50 caliber musket balls from close range including shots through both lungs and the head. The bear forced the men to climb trees to avoid being mauled. Eventually the bear died from its wounds.

Tough customer.

When the bear showed up Sunday, Blume had just finished his business, he said, and had hiked his waders.

Lucky for Blume he'd already hiked his waders. Considering what must have happened when the bear showed up I imagine an un-wadered man would have had quite a scent trail dribbling down his legs....

"A slug out of a .12 guage shot gun is a bad boy, at 6' it's awesome."

But it WORKS. That is the only think that will at any distance. A 30/06 at close range works for a head shot. But a 12-gauge slug is best all around.

Well, I don't know how he felt but I would imagine he had to pull down those waders again after that kind of close encounter.....

I posted this a couple of years ago on FR but could not find it in the archives, so here ya go again ...

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, recently issued this bulletin:

In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field.

"We advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.

It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear manure:

Black bear manure is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear manure has little bells in it and smells like pepper."

Reasonably effective on bears? yes. Awesome? No.

Awesome bear medicine:
