Government Announces Nationwide Ground Beef Recall

The Associated Press
Published: Jun 30, 2002

WASHINGTON (AP) - ConAgra Beef Co. of Greeley, Colo., is voluntarily recalling approximately 354,200 pounds of fresh and frozen ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria, the Agriculture Department announced Sunday.

The department's Food Safety and Inspection Service said the labels on all the products being recalled bear the establishment code "EST.969" inside the USDA seal of inspection. It was produced on May 31 and distributed to retail, food service and institutional establishments nationwide. the problem was discovered through microbiological traceback sampling, the inspection service said.

"Because of the potential hazard of foodborne illness from consumption of meat products contaminated with harmful bacteria such as E. coli ... I urge consumers who have purchased the suspect product not to eat it and return it to the place of purchase," said Linda Swacina, acting FSIS administrators. "USDA is informing the public so consumers who may have purchased and stored the product in their refrigerators or freezers will know to check. Also, diners may wish to ask if their meals contain the recalled product."

She said the government has received no reports of illness associated with the meat being recalled.

E. coli can cause serious illness and sometimes death. Symptoms include chills and bloody diarrhea.

Consumers with questions about the recall may contact the company at 970-506-8052.

The following cases of ground beef products being recalled are marked with the package code "Freeze or sell by 06 18 02," and each case contained six 10-pound cylindrical packages.

I thought that even if it is shipped with E Coli, that if you cook it properly it would be okay.

But I don't cook mine :)

There you go, folks; stick to the steaks for the 4th, or go chicken...it's better for you anyways.

Who buys ground beef in 10 lb tubes? (Besides nursing homes, school cafeterias, etc.)

Yummy. Conagra's political donations make interesting reading, BTW. Tiny Tom Daschle sure got a wad. You know, maybe all this rotten meat is the Democrats' fault.

I do. When I get a side of beef to fill my freezers, the slaughterhouse packs the hamburger in 10-pound tubes. I then break them up into 2-pound lots, wrap them in Ziploc bags, then freeze them. The slaughterhouse charges about 20 bucks extra here to pack hamburger in individual 1-pound packs.

I do, or my wife does I should say.

Cut it up in 2lb blocks and freeze it.

I do buy my steaks, straight from the meat counter to the grill.

Contaminated food passed USDA inspection?

I'm talking more for the arteries, but I suppose if we're "flame-kissing" our Fourth dinner, well, go with the steak.

It was produced on May 31 and distributed to retail....

and it took them a month to let us know? did they want to make sure as much as possible was bought and used, therefore non returnable?

e-coli forms on the outside of raw meat. since it cooks from the outside in, cooking a steak even a little will kill it. Hamburgers are another story since when you grind the meat you distribute the e-coli throughout... so you gotta cook it all the way

You sure know your meat!

It will.

Hit 168 degrees for a short time and you will be fine as froghair.

There are cross contamination issues to be concerned about though. Like taking paties out to the grill and then returning with them on the same plate, not washing your hands after handling the beef, raw meat juices running around and getting into the salad and such..

Aside from that though it's no biggie. I am suprised it mertis a recall.
