OH, but wait! All the Israel-sycophants here on FR will TELL you that the Jewish vote is going to the GOP. So this story can't be right.

If he doesn't get jerky, I'm sure Bush would be happy to give him some Middle East-area post to end his public service career in (being that he's Jewish and has international relations experience).

Rep. Gilman is one of the all-too-few Republican moderates, being pro-choice and supportive of the separation of church and state. Let me see if I can sum up my feelings on this RINO being farmed out to pasture.
Bye-bye Bernie.

It's clear by the article this guy is a liberal jew and is mulling switching only to save his job.

And another thing. This is obviously a propaganda piece to win back jewish votes from Bush. Why else would they say the Republicans have abandoned Jews?

Gilman is a terrific man, a wonderful intellect, and a man who has spent a lifetime in Congress. But his time, like that of Dick Armey, and perhaps like J.C. Watts is up. The Congress will continue without his input, and uses will be found for him for the rest of his life. Why screw up a good life by being a bad loser?

This is very old news, and the article is inane. What happened had nothing to do with Gilman's religion. It had to do with both parties wanting their favorites to not have to worry about re-election in any way, shape of form. That included Reynolds, Sweeny, Hinchey and Lowey. TGhe Dems also wanted to shore up Israel. Gilman is still trying to overturn the plan, and is taking polls regarding running against (1)Kelly as a Republican, (2) Kelly as a Democrat, (3) Hinchey as a Republican, and (4)Engle as a Republican. I consider number 3 the most likely. If he loses, he will be richly rewarded. The other options promise no rewards for a loss, and thus offer up downside risk. Number 3 is the most likely option also IMO for Gilman staying in Congress.

Well that hit piece won't go far. If it got any publicity, it would backfire. DeLay is a passionate, and sometimes close to wound too tight, rabid, man, and one of his passions is the well being of Israel. Everyone knows this.

I'm not sure what your point is. The issue is where the GOP can make gains. Jewish folks strike me a prime target. Perhaps your idea of who should be a supporter of the GOP and mine are at odds.

What happened had nothing to do with Gilman's religion.I find this argument to be almost humorous. Since when has "religion" had anything to do with the Jewish vote? The majority of Jews in the U.S. are not religious, and religion plays no part in the way they vote.
They see their Judaism as a social artifact; they consider themselves one more oppressed minority. Witness the almost rabid fear that the ADL whips up among its consitutency about "fundamentalist Christians" (the only consistently solid support, I might add, that Israel really has in the U.S.)
Jews tend to be liberal, period. I would venture to say that there are as many notable Jewish conservatives--not RINOs or neo-Cons but true conservatives like Michael Medved or Laura Schlessinger--as there are African-American conservatives.
And the GOP is just as likely in the near future to capture either of those demographics as the other.

Well that is also overly simplistic, since unsurprisingly, close to half of American Jews are pretty conservative on economic issues, even while a chunk of those are fairly liberal on social issues. I get along with these folks very well ideologically, but then I am a neocon.

It has nothing to do with WHO should be a GOP supporter--IMO anyone who is in the Dem camp is equal-opportunity stupid, regardless of race, creed or lobotomy-status.
It has to do with REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. You're just as likely to get a significant Jewish vote for the GOP--unless you're talking a RINO like this guy--as you are a significant black vote.
Both demographics are DEEPLY ENTRENCHED in their support for the Dems. I even had one guy here on FR, from New York, crowing about how "the Jewish under-30 vote went ALMOST 45% for Bush" (and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that this is true).
I've used examples in my own experience, people I went to school with and have known for years, businesspeople, with families and mortgages, etc. But their parents voted for Dems and THEY will vote for Dems and their tongues will blacken and fall out before that's going to change.

By the way, I think Reagan got about 40% of the Jewish vote.

...close to half of American Jews are pretty conservative on economic issues, ...And MORE than half of African-Americans, and about 80% of hispanics, are conservative on social issues. What of it? That has absolutely NOTHING TO DO with the fact that when election-time comes around, they all march in lock-step to the polls and pull the Donkey's tail.
