His point about pledging allegiance to the flag coz it changes when we get a new State is about the weakest argument I've ever heard for anything.
He also indicates that we are pledging allegiance to 'the government' when we pledge allegiance to the Republic. How can that be when the government 'changes every day' by adding new employees and getting rid of old ones? Sheesh.

Good Points!

I didn't bother to read the article, but did he actually say what religion was established by having kids say the words
under God?
Or is this another one of those, I'll ignore what the constitution says.. type of articles.

I am not sure that an "intelligent" debate is possible.. it is a matter of AFFIRMATION.. that the MAJORITY of Americans still consider America to be...
I suggest the reaction of the U.S. Senate clearly suggests that we are...

You've brought up an interesting point, is referencing "under God" an establishment of any particular religion? It is clear it references at least religion exists in the fact that there is "something" greater than the individual that the People of the United States is under the control of.
By the way, I am a servant of Jesus the Christ (a Christian), and I agree the government in its official capacity should not condone any particular religion. I do not believe that is what the pledge does, it only recognizes that something greater exists, and to me is just wasted words, but does not violate the first ammendment.
To: davidosborne
That doesn't hold to much water, as a MAJORITY of Americans don't believe that Jesus is the only way to heaven. Which likely (likely=not my call just going by the word of God) going to hell.
A MAJORITY of Americans also believe that the United States is (some version) of a Christian nation which it clearly was not.
To: borntodiefree
The TRUTH is simply that we ARE a nation UNDER GOD, and not just ANY "god" but the God of the Bible, and it is only through the finished work of Jesus Christ that we can ever be right with God.
God has His way of dealing with Nations, and its not by "LUCK" that America is as successful as we are. It's by the mercy of God, and becuase as a Nation (Consitutionaly) we give Him his proper place.. When we as a nation (Constitutionaly) turn our back on Him, and tell Him we don't need His divine protection any longer... <-- That single event will mark the END of prosperity and we will immediately become like any other Christ rejecting nation.
I usually don't take this much time to respond to a single person, but I trust you were sincere in your question, so I feel I must be sincere in my response.

GOD is not a religion it is a generic term that many religions have adopted. Religion is not just a philosophy based on theism. Atheism is one of the most dogmatic religions we have. This actually comes very close to establishing Atheism as the state religion. It sets the precedent for all references to God or Creator in government documents, from the Declaration of Independence to our money, to be ruled unconstitutional.

Was that tool or FOOL on his forehead? Don't make fun of him, he went to the Doctors for a Vasectomy but instead got a labodomy. He was one of the stars in "One flew over the Cuckoo's nest"

I wish my fellow libertarians would get off this issue, and use their energy fighting socialism, drug and gun laws- these cooks are killing the cause. I'll stick with Cato. I have never heard Boortz suggest getting the government out of education altogher. For whatever reason, he will occasionally go on a tirade against Christian conservatives.
To: davidosborne
From all that I have heard, the lawsuit was a sham from the get-go. The guy claimed his daughter had been forced to recite the Pledge. Then, after the ruling, it comes out that she did so voluntarily. From everything I have read, he was doing it all for himself.

David,
From your writing, it seems clear that you are a brother in Christ Jesus, and we are in complete agreement that Christ is the only Savior from our sins. To keep this section short I won't go into much more detail about my faith in this response, but you can see it at my website at www.freedomforharrisburg.com.
However, as much as we both would like to believe it(and I did until I saw the evidence), the United States government has never been a Christian Government. I'll append a few pieces of that evidence now.
Treaty of Tripoli 1796
ARTICLE 11.
As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion,-as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen,-and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
Thomas Jefferson:
"I have examined all the known superstitions of the word, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology. Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned. What has been the effect of this coercion? To make one half the world fools and the other half hypocrites; to support roguery and error all over the earth."
SIX HISTORIC AMERICANS,
by John E. Remsburg, letter to William Short
Thomas Paine:
"I would not dare to so dishonor my Creator God by attaching His name to that book (the Bible)."
"Among the most detestable villains in history, you could not find one worse than Moses. Here is an order, attributed to 'God' to butcher the boys, to massacre the mothers and to debauch and rape the daughters. I would not dare so dishonor my Creator's name by (attaching) it to this filthy book (the Bible)."
"It is the duty of every true Deist to vindicate the moral justice of God against the evils of the Bible."
"Accustom a people to believe that priests and clergy can forgive sins...and you will have sins in abundance."
"The Christian church has set up a religion of pomp and revenue in pretended imitation of a person (Jesus) who lived a life of poverty."
There are many more examples, but I figure this should do for the FR post.
To: davidosborne
Sorry to say there are more than two! I have heard several morons call radio talk shows and agree with the idiot Judge from the 9th circus court, who obviously doesn't agree with himself!
To: davidosborne
Oh well, he's entitled to his opinion however dumb it is.
