Aguilar being taken to the hospital

Escaped inmate loses freedom, arm

A Bernalillo County jail escapee had a brief flirtation with freedom Thursday night, but it ended abruptly in an apparent meeting of a pair of handcuffs and a train.

Ezequiel Aguilar stumbled into the parking lot of the Icehouse nightclub off of First Street, next to the train tracks, at about 9:30 missing his right arm. Fire department officials say it appears he was attempting to use a locomotive's wheel to cut off a pair of handcuffs.

Aguilar had been the object of a search for much of the evening. From the Icehouse, he was transported to a hospital where he was reported to be in serious condition Friday morning. His arm was recovered in a nearby parking lot.

All part of the trick... how do you handcuff a one-armed man, man?

But he must've had real skinny arms because handcuffs on most people won't slide down over the hand or up over the forearm.

To protect the gene pool I wish the train's wheels had cut off another part of his anatomy.

Sheesh, he must've been planning to cut the cuffs, then yank his hand out of the way before the train got to his arm. Don't 'ya just hate those trains going 90mph?

Channel 4 deserves an award, too, for gruesome coverage. The news clip I saw was shot through the back window of ambulance and showed the dis-armed escapee conscious and writhing in pain, minus his arm.

Imagine if it didn't cut the cuffs' chain, but just flattened it real good. Then you'd find yourself in the unenviable position of hugging a moving train wheel with no way to let go. I suppose you could get up in a squatting position, run along side the train, work your other arm over the top of the wheel, then jump in front of the wheel between the tracks and grab the axle and pull your feet up so you didn't get dragged to death. Yea, that's it! That's what he was thinking! Smart guy.

Sounds like he carried it a ways. I guess he didn't know that as a felon he loses his right to bear arms.

Probably not the same type locomotive - but check out the specs - Total Weight on Rails: 425,000 pounds.

A fully loaded 777 is 545,000 pounds at takeoff.
