It was Senator Jesse Helms. He has been in poor health and was unable to attend the cermonial vote.

I believe I read that Jesse Helms was brought home to Raleigh from DC yesterday (or the day before). He's recovering from heart valve surgery.

This vote is much ado about nothing.
These same Senators (worthless lot) will be out
stonewalling decent appointees tomorrow, or sooner,
so that they can wait to appoint liberals who do not
believe in a strict interpetation of the constitution.

You are so right! I almost gagged when Feinstein stood up and said the 9th Circuit embarrassed her. Well the 9th Circuit has been an embarrassment for years and she is just now realizing it! Give me a break!

The Senate is hypocritical. They confirmed everyone of those judicial clowns.

I wonder if Mikey Moore will cite Jesse Helms as a "profile in courage" for his abstention in this vote. < /sarcasm >
Looks like the rats saw the political liability in this one.

If the senators want to put credibility behind their votes, they need to start impeachment proceedings against two of the three 9th Circuit judges. ...

I am just cynical enough of the Demon Cats, to think they all believe in the court's decision, but chose to condemn it, purely out of a desire to avoid committing political suicide.

You are absolutely right, and that's why it alarms me that conservatives are allowing themselves to get all worked up over this. All the leftist politicians will blunt criticism of their really dangerous policies by jumping in front of the cameras to "condemn" this decision, and lots of idiots will decide it's okay to vote for them and not pay attention to all the other stuff they do.
Who cares what wording the government schools use for the Pledge Allegiance? Why are your kids in the government schools to begin with (and the leftist politicians are THRILLED to see conservatives distracted from this question)? This decision has no impact whatsoever on the wording of the Pledge which any private institution makes a practice of reciting.
The deletion of a mumbled "under God" in a rote recitation by students, just before they are taught that the 2nd Amendment grants only a state-supervised collective right to bear arms, or just before they start another day of their 3 week unit on pretending to be Muslims, or just before they get another dose of lies about how the U.S.A. is an evil, greedy country that oppresses the whole world, is hardly any great loss. It should be studiously ignored.

It doesn't embarrass her. But claiming that it does gets her some free votes from clueless citizens.

Any senators that supported the ruling and then condemned it with this vote need to have their hypocrisy illustrated in advertising since the media will not bring it to light.

Absolutely, Dashole jumped out in front of this parade PDQ and grandstanded like he was the sole defender of the Pledge. They know they would get crucified if they showed their true colors by celibrating this temporary victory for evil. I'm sure they secretly rejoice in this verdict. I wonder if any will be dumb enough to let their true feelings get documented?

I know -- I wanted to throw up when Feinstein talked. You could tell that her, daschle, and leahy were really uncomfortable having to support the outrage about the pledge! Leahy and daschle kept patting themselves on the back which made me madder!
To: ottersnot
Ah, the power of public opinion. A substantial number of leftists in that body (both Republican and Democrat) I am sure privately have no problem whatsoever with the ruling.
