Murder suspect struck, killed by truck on Independence Blvd. (Charlotte, NC)
The Charlotte Observer ^ | June 25, 2001 | ROBERT F. MOORE

Posted on 06/26/2002 11:06:00 AM PDT by jern

The search for a murder suspect ended on Independence Boulevard just before noon today when the suspect was struck by a tractor-trailer and killed.

Witnesses told police the man ran in front of an 18-wheeler, turned his back to the truck, bent over and grabbed his knees about 11:45 a.m. The truck hit Delvecchio Durran Boyd, 23, killing him instantly, police said.

"There was nothing the truck driver could do to avoid hitting him," said Officer Lee Ratliff, a police spokesman.

Witnesses told police that minutes before Boyd was killed, he walked in front of a car. It swerved and missed him, police said. He walked to the sidewalk and waited for the inbound truck near Cricket Arena. Police are investigating his death as a possible suicide.

Traffic safety and homicide investigators are still on the scene.

As of 1:30 p.m. the inbound lanes beginning at Briar Creek Road were closed and traffic was being diverted to Eastway Drive. Authorities hope to have traffic back to normal by 2 p.m.

Authorities this morning signed an arrest warrant charging Boyd with murder. His girlfriend, Marshall Ivosha Johsnon, was found dead in a Piedmont Courts apartment, 1004-C Willis St., just after midnight. Police have not said how Johnson, 22, was killed.

Investigators had been looking for Boyd beginning early this morning, putting out an all-points-bulletin for Boyd and releasing his photo to the media. Police say they had no idea he was in the area before he was killed.

Boyd's criminal history includes a 1998 manslaughter conviction. He was released from prison two years later.

Investigators said the northeast Charlotte slaying this morning was the 38th homicide this year and the ninth attributed to domestic violence. At this time last year, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police investigated 27 homicides, records show.

Neither the victim, nor the suspect in the latest homicide lived at the apartment where the slaying occurred. They may have been visiting the woman's relatives, police said.

Today's homicide was the second in the housing complex this year. Barbara Monique Ealey was found stabbed to death outside her apartment Feb. 27. Johnny Franklin Ealey, her husband of 10 years, was charged with murder in that slaying.

I feel sorry for the truck driver--how's that for something to have to live with the rest of your life? Otherwise, it sounds to me like the perp did the rest of us a favor, and cleansed the gene pool a bit.

I feel sorry for the driver too, but why would he have to live with this for the rest of his life?
