Bush's Walk Doesn't Match His Talk on Life Issue
Covenant News ^ | 6/25/02 | Chuck Baldwin

Posted on 06/26/2002 7:42:12 AM PDT by truthandlife

G.W. Bush claims to be pro-life. Because of this, he has enjoyed undying support from most pro-life organizations and grassroots Christian activists. When it comes to talking pro-life, Bush does it just about as well as anyone. When it comes to walking the walk, however, Bush is found seriously wanting.

World Net Daily and Human Events recently reported, "The White House lobbied last week to kill a Senate Republican effort to effectively stop commercial human cloning in the United States, Senate sources (said)." Such effort is contrary to Bush's public statements that he supports a complete ban on human cloning.

According to the report, "White House lobbyists contacted Republican senators June 18 to ask them to vote that morning for cloture (a closing of debate to bring a legislative question to a vote) on the Senate's terrorism insurance bill (S2600), thus preventing the up-or-down vote on a human cloning amendment that (Senator Sam) Brownback wanted to attach to the bill. His amendment would have banned the patenting of human embryos - effectively destroying any economic incentive for the experimental cloning of human beings."

Once again, Bush's action betrays his rhetoric. As in the case of embryonic stem cell research, Bush has accommodated the pro-death position and betrayed the pro-life cause.

This particular decision was especially egregious when one considers that this was a "rare opportunity for a Senate vote on human cloning." Understandably, many Senate staffers and conservative activists were "dismayed" at Bush's decision to kill Brownback's amendment.

This dismay is doubly warranted when one considers that the House of Representatives has already passed a bill to ban completely human cloning by a 100-vote majority. Therefore, Senate passage of a similar bill is all that stands in the way of a presidential signature. Perhaps, that is what Bush wanted to avoid.

The old adage, "Talk is cheap," is especially germane to politicians. If history teaches anything, it teaches that politicians will say anything to get elected (or stay elected).

There is another adage that voters need to pay more attention to: "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." It is past time for conservatives and Christians to stop listening to what Bush says and start watching what he does.

Jorge Bush is a one-termer. Barely elected with the near-unanimous support of two huge key single-issue groups (gun people and right-to-lifers), he's now disappointed many among both.

And Jorge Bush has alienated many of the one racial/regional group that voted for him - European-Americans in Red Nation - with his constant pandering to Hispanics.

Understand that politics rules the day in Washington but it won't necessarily get you elected for a second term. Ask GW's dad.

GW is listening too much to Rove on all of his decisions and it will cost him the conservative base in '04 unless he wakes up and starts to stand up on principle instead of trying to get votes from liberals.

Voting 65 to 31, the Senate barred consideration of amendments unrelated to the insurance measure, effectively shelving a proposal by Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) to add a provision barring issuance of patents for cloned human beings or the technology to produce them.

This article says Bush supported the legislation and Daschle was the problem

More on Daschle:

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) last Friday filed a motion for cloture on the terrorism insurance bill the chamber had been considering. The move was aimed at blocking a pending amendment by Sam Brownback (R-KS) to ban the patenting of cloning technology. (Earlier, Brownback had rejected the Senate leadership's ground rules for floor debate on stand-alone anti-cloning legislation, and vowed to continue to pursue the issue in piecemeal fashion by trying to attach anti-cloning amendments to unrelated legislation. His amendment to the terrorism insurance bill represented his first test of that strategy.) On Tuesday, the Senate invoked cloture on the terrorism insurance bill by a vote of 65-31, rendering Brownback's amendment nongermane.

This story states the "lobbyists" were merely two White House aides

Ummmmm....seems this story is falling apart at the seams a little...will see what else I can find.

Are you telling me that the candidate whose soundbite was "it's up to her" who became the President who used his first televised address to nail open the window of Human Non-Personhood -- stating that his was a best use of already-been-killed "EXCESS" human lives -- is not pro-life?

Gosh, what a shock.

Here's the reason...

Regardless of the vote limiting debate, the terrorism insurance bill may be in trouble in its own right. Republicans are trying to protect victimized companies from punitive damages and say President Bush probably would veto the bill if it reached his desk without the protection.

"The president has said he will not sign a bill that will make victims of terrorists subject to attacks by plaintiff attorneys and subject to punitive damages," warned Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas, on Tuesday.

They did not want to add the cloning issue to this particular bill because it will be vetoed. Knew there had to be more to this story....danged knee jerkers....

You're gonna love, Al Gorilla as our next president. You folks need to get off your moral high horse and realize that while Bush ain't perfect, he is a hell of a lot better than what we would have if Gore or any other democrat is elected.

My post #13 uncovers the real facts of the matter...Bush has threatened a veto on the Terrorism Insurance bill...could you just imagine the gasps of horror if the cloning bill were attached to it and he was forced to veto it? At least this way, the cloning bill stands on its own and can still be brought up.

Add "bald-faced liar" to Chuck Baldwin's infamous resume. Chuckie passes himself off as some kind of minister; he's one hateful SOB.
