UNDERAGE DRIVER INVOLVED IN DEADLY ACCIDENT
  posted: 06-24-2002

You've heard about problems surrounding underage drinking, but what about underage driving? Police say they pull over teenagers all the time who have no business being on the street. One of the saddest examples is what happened this weekend in the Arklatex. A 16-year-old boy died this weekend after his 13-year-old sister, who was driving, hit another car. It's against the law for anyone under 15 to drive a car. If your teen is 15, they must be accompanied by an adult and have a permit. At 16, they can drive alone, but they have a curfew. Then at 17, teens can drive freely. Police say the best way to educate your teen is through driving lessons. The state requires a minimum of 36 hours of driving lessons before a teen can get their permit.

Why wasn't the 16 year-old driving instead of the 13 year-old?

Maybe the 16 year old was teaching the 13 year old how to drive.

My mother taught me how to drive at age 11. It really isn't that uncommon.

Laws punish, they do not prevent.

I was afraid that's what Arklatex was. I'd hoped for something more creative, though.

I'd say I was from Calexico or Mexicali, but there are actually cities with those names. I'll be venturing to Nebia on bidness in July.
