Looking for Freepers in the Trucking Industry (vanity)

I am looking for some information/advice about modern technology in the trucking industry, and I was hoping to find some Freepers out there who might be able to help me. I am particularly interested in on-board vehicle navigation systems and the types of information that can be reported through them for individual vehicles. What I am looking for is not for my own use within this industry, but is more of a general idea about the availability of data that trucking companies would collect for themselves. Instead of posting my request here I’ll send the details to anyone who is willing to Freep-Mail me with an e-mail address (just in case some of what I’m asking about is a "trade secret" of some kind).

We use a Qualcom system on about 200 trucks. We can track the trucks, email the drivers, pay fuel taxes, etc..... and through engine & equipment sensors we can remotely track everything from speed, temps, oil pressure and many other criteria. There are several makers of these systems. One big problem with them is components are like computers and are often out of date about every 2 years or so. I am not an expert on these systems BTW.

Everything that umgud said was true - they can find your truck withing 500 feet - some have panic buttons so that if something were to happen you could have rescue service on site within a few minutes - the unit under the name Qualcomm is mostly owned by Schneider Trucking - There are many brand names out there but the Qualcomm is by far the most versitile and easiest to use - there down sides to the wonderful technology we have now - D.O.T can get the records from the service providers and compare where you were to what your logs, fuel, toll, repair show - I like the Qualcomm because it saved me from having to call in on the telephone to check for loads and I could recieve directions and other information at the touch of a button - a person has to decide what is best for each type of situation - Most companies that offer the service through trucking companies will charge a one time fee to install the unit and then a monthly charge for use - they may also require a deposit on the unit in case you were to break or loose or steal the unit - As far as what the trucking company can get off the unit from your truck, they can get anything that it is hooked to - one company had it hooked to the brakes - they were able to tell how many times the driver slammed on the brakes and for how long - they can have a simulation of your dash with the gauges and speedometer and rpm meter back at the company just as if they were sitting next to you in the truck - think of it this way - the ultimate big brother - it won't be long and the government will require them on all trucks - so much for privacy
