Hot doggers grilled near Pentagon

From the National Desk Published 6/21/2002 11:20 AM

MADISON, Wis., June 21 (UPI) -- It could have been wurst.

A pair of hot doggers taking their Wienermobile to the National Capital Barbecue Battle in Washington were pulled over by the Virginia State Police this week for driving too close to the Pentagon.

Sarah Delea, a spokeswoman for Oscar Mayer, said Friday the pair was unaware Route 110 had been closed to truck traffic since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center.

"A police officer let them know and was kind enough to direct traffic to allow the Wienermobile to exit," Delea said. No ticket was issued.

The distinctive hot dog-shaped truck packed with hot dog whistles and a karaoke machine for singing bologna jingles was making its first trip of the summer from Madison with a pair of rookie hot doggers, Will Keller and Paula Pendleton, both 22 and recent college graduates who had just finished a two-week-long course Hot Dog High.

"They were very apologetic. They didn't see any signs but now they know. They'll make sure not to go down route 110 again," Delea said.

The incident occurred late Tuesday.

"Obviously this was a mistake," Virginia State Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "This hot dog posed no threat to us."

I agree. The frank approach in these situations is best.

I never sausage a bunch of bad puns on such a serious issue. Maybe they were casing the joint.

I hope this isn't the end of their hot dog careers - it's true that wieners never quit.

It sounded like the police and the driver had a frank discussion. No bun... I mean pun intended. ;-D

Something about this story doesn't cut the mustard. What did Oscar Meyer know and when did he know it?

Sure does, it's about to pop the top off of his turban.

I'm sure everyone heard how he shot a woman in the back of the head.

Mmmmmm, just goes to show you what a college education is worth these days.

It's good to see the police use some common sense good judgement instead of hauling them back to the station for further grilling.
