Fox concerned over Central American immigration into Mexico
The News (Mexico City) ^ | June 25, 2002

President Vicente Fox on Monday said he was concerned by the phenomenon of Central American emigration into Mexico and the United States.

Immigration is one of the issues he and his Central American counterparts will focus on at a regional summit scheduled for June 27-28 in Merida, Yucatan.

Hundreds of Central American emigrants illegally cross into Mexico on their way to the U.S. every day.

While most are detained and deported, the flow is increasing on a daily basis.

During the first five months of this year alone, officials in the southern state of Chiapas expelled more than 30,000 immigrants who had entered the country illegally, a National Migration Institute official said.

Fox also acknowledged the need to improve the treatment authorities mete out to detainees.

"You have to work on respect for human rights, that's why we have asked Central American countries to open consulates in the south and southeast," he said at a press conference with foreign reporters.

Fox stressed the main challenge lies in changing the conditions that cause massive immigration toward the United States. Aside from immigration, the Puebla-Panama Plan will also take center stage at the Merida meeting.

The Puebla-Panama Plan envisions the implementation of joint projects aimed at giving the region an economic and social boost.

The plan entails, among other goals, a four-lane highway running from southern Mexico to Panama, creating greater access to electricity and building tourist infrastructure.

Financing for the Mexican stretch of the roadway has been secured and construction is already underway.

Under the leadership of Jorge Bush we are going to become a 3rd world nation. Just what we need! a 4 lane highway with an unending flow of immigration from Central and South America. Close the Borders NOW!!!

He must be afraid of a drop in remittances to Mexico if too many Central Americans get in on the act.

Here the Mexican Govt. is helping Mexicans enter our country illegally by giving them water, first aid, food etc. and yet here their President is concerned about illegal aliens coming across their borders. And what do they do? They arrest them and deport them? What a load of crap. We should learn a valuable lesson from them.

But President Fox, these 30,000 immigrants are just looking for a better life for themselves and their children. Why not just grant them an amnesty, and provide them with driver's licenses, and welfare, and a free public school education for their children, and free medical care. You know, the same things that the Mexican government keeps demanding that the U.S. should provide to Mexican illegal aliens in the U.S.

We cannot stand for this, Denny's has a shortage of dishwashers right now, and the crops need a picking! Not enough of my tax dollars are going to fund their medical expenses, I want to waste more money on supporting illegal immigrants, come on Mr. Fox, make it easy for them!

Screw the American citizens without insurance, let them rot, I feel the need to support some migrant workers, lord knows they are the lifeline of the U.S.

Maybe we can ALL learn spanish to make it easier on them!

Back in the 1960's it was possible for teenagers to work at jobs such as dishwashers and field labor. I picked strawberries in the San Juan Capistrano valley during June and washed dishes during the winter weekends at a cafe. These jobs didn't pay a lot, certainly didn't have any status either, but I sure felt good about having a job.

Now labor laws make that impossible. During the past 30 years we have had a flood of 80 million emigrants into this country and our government services, such as welfare, is severly overburdened. Makes no sense.

The sad thing is, if we eliminate illegal/migrant workers from these jobs, a Grand Slam Breakfast would cost 6 bucks and a pound of grapes would be 5 bucks. Most of America would rather have cheap food than control of the border.

Your analysis doesn't take into account the amount we would save in taxes we currently pay to support them and their children.

Even if we shut the border today, we are still stuck paying for them for a long time. We are stuck every time they shove a woman over the fence who is crowning so her baby can be born in the U.S. We assume responsibility for that child for 18 years, PLUS his/her family, ie mom, dad, etc.

We are stuck for everyone who entered before today until they die because of their drain on the medicare and welfare system. While they are here they have 5, 6, 7 kids who drain on medicare, welfare, and the schools system they attend for which their parents pay no tax dollars into.

We are stuck paying to keep the ones who have commited crimes in jail.

We are stuck paying higher insurance costs for our medical and for our cars to cover those illegals who are uninsured.

We are stuck paying for lawsuits filed by them, we are stuck paying for welfare cliams, we are stuck paying for people to live ILLEGALLY in this country while some American citizens lose everything and move their family to the streets because their job can be done by an illegal for a lot less.

We are stuck because we are American citizens and we have less opportunities and services than an illegal immigrant.

I think we ought to sue Mexico to set up "Survival Stations" to support these illegal immigrants along their trek into Mexico. Stations should be spaced out along the border and stocked up with plenty of Chalupas and Tecate so that the "new" Mexican residents can refresh themselves before continuing into the "promised land" that is greater Mexico...

That is a very valid point. You can only slice the cake so thin before it starts to crumble.
