Britain says it will not help finance Turkey's leadership of peacekeeping force

LONDON - Prime Minister Tony Blair ( news - web sites)'s government said Monday it would not help finance Turkey's leadership of the peacekeeping force in Afghanistan ( news - web sites).

Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said that instead, Britain was leaving computer and communications equipment and a fire engine for the use of the 19-nation international force, known as the International Security Assistance Force.

Last week, Turkey took over command from Britain of the more than 4,000 international peacekeepers now in Afghanistan. About 75 percent of Britain's 1,500-strong contingent will leave by the end of the month, while the number of Turkish troops will rise to about 1,400.

Turkey, which is struggling with a deep economic crisis, is worried about the mission's cost and had asked the United States and other nations to provide the Turkish military with satellite communication systems and cargo planes.

The U.S. administration has promised Turkey that it would ask Congress for dlrs 200 million in economic aid and another dlrs 28 million in military aid for Turkey.

"The U.K. will not be giving any financial assistance, but has agreed to leave in Afghanistan for use by ISAF some computer and communications equipment and a fire engine," Hoon said in a written reply to a question raised by lawmakers in the House of Commons.

The peacekeeping force has been patrolling Kabul since January, working with the interim government and a new police force to prevent violence and lawlessness like that which followed the military action by U.S.-supported forces, which drove the Taliban from power.

How nice. They are leaving the Turks a fire engine. That will certainly be a big help. I will find out where my rep and senators are on this. Wish I could do more.

...to provide the Turkish military with satellite communication systems and cargo planes.

Turkey will get these or be provided unlimited access to this equipment.

Are the oil rich muslim nations in the region - helping?

They should have no hesitation to aid their muslim brothers, who are assisting muslim brothers in a muslim nation, that was devasted by their criminal support of "criminal elements" of Islam..

There could be no better way for these rich muslim nations to show their "moderation" in practicing their "Peace Loving" muslim faith.

Turkey must NOT carry the full load in convincing the world that muslims are not a murderous cult - hell bent on the destruction of non-muslim civilization.

In my opinion --- there has already been too much non-muslim money and blood spend cleaning up the "criminal element" of the "peace loving Islamic faith".. Time for the "real" muslims to step up to the plate and clean up their own damned mess..... Or, the U.S. may be foreced to - but NOT with dollars.

Well, you wouldn't expect the Brits to want the US and Turks to win after they take a powder out of there, would you?

The British Army used to be one of the most professional in the world. Look what they did to the Argentinians (who were not nearly as bad as they were made to look during the Falklands War). Now, thanks to Labour Political Correctness, they have been reduced to impotence. There performance was disappointing -- not due to the efforts of the individual soldiers and jr. officers, who are still outstanding -- but rather because the general commanding is into PC.

Sadly, I have only Rep. Henry (The Nose) Waxman and Senators Boxer and Feinstein.
Of the three, only Feinstein occassioally utters a sensible word.

Slightly in jest, this is probably the fault of all the Americans who were
making light of the U.K.'s "Operation Snipe". (In parts of the USA a "snipe hunt" is
something done to pull a practical joke on the "snipe hunter").
Plus "Operation Snipe" just doesn't have the testosterone-sound of "Operation Anaconda"...

LOL! I love you bro. You are soo funny... You bring tears to my eyes. Sad ones.

None of those bastards in leadership, and few of the regular joes can be trusted. It's you and I with our backs to each other. Or else our backs to the wall.

We either fight them on their turf, or wait for them again. I say we invest together, and when it's time to lick our wounds and clean our pieces, we'll remember who was there with us and who wasn't.

Pretty funny.... the Greek parliament will not even discuss "17 November"... and yet the DC crowd kow tow. Now here, Turkey shows some true leadership, fitting of one of our greatest and most reliable allies, and neither we nor the UK have the guts to step in along side them. Utterly disgusting!

Ben Franklin once described the US as "Britain's Bastard Child." Here they've once again passed the Buck and left you and us holding the bag.

But they did kiss a mean ass to get us to take over from them. Now their language consists of a plain and simple F-U.

The Brits and the rest of the "Peace-keeping" nations are acting true to form. You know, Turk, that if your country was sending terrorists to the U.S. and Israel, you'd be getting tons of support from Europe, Britain and Canada. You bet, I'll write my Congressional representatives.

Check back. Turkey doesn't have money to maintain this type of operation. They are only wanting (needing) assistance to undertake this military operation. period
