In historic Show Low, red tags on homes that likely can't be saved from the fury of fire were grim signposts of two blazes that merged Sunday in northeastern Arizona.

At least part of the city will burn, a firefighting official said.

I'm over 100 miles to the west. But I can still see the smoke plume.

Still no word on my family members' status. A cousin is flying to Phoenix then taking a 4 x 4 into the area starting today, and I and others will be joining him in a couple of days. If the combined resources of the Red Cross, FEMA, and others can't make a simple phone call to tell us if our family members are alive or dead, then we'll find out on our own, "curfew" or no curfew. This is complete BS, and somebody is going to pay.

Far better to let it burn than actually let anyone harvest timber. After all the ecofreaks don't give a rat's ass about the environment, all they care about is preventing other people from using natural resources

Well said! This fire has done more damage in a few days than anything that the ecofreaks say is done by 'uncaring' Americans and business interests. The amt of wildlife harmed to say nothing of the human suffering and danger to human life is beyond imagination right now.

Then the final count comes out I wonder if congress will connect the dots? I hope they hold hearings on this and demand some answers. Of course they themselves will have to show how they voted on certain issues.

Not a chance. Trees don't vote, and the number of people directly affected by the fires don't have enough votes to make any difference to the Kongressthieves getting re-elected. However, the radical left still has plenty of votes (look how many voted for Nader), so expect Kongress to continue on its present course.

Why do I keep trying to find love for one's country in the government? It is not an option in congress. To love America. When I see America burning like that I am amazed that nothing will be done about it!

Local radio (via internet) was pleading for those evacuated to contact Red Cross to put their names on a list for relatives, friends to contact. I hope and trust they are o.k. but just haven't gotten on a list yet.

Quotes from this link (from 6/24 AZ Republic): Forestry policy is hampered by politics

As the "Rodeo-Chediski" fire roared through Arizona's high country, governors from Western states meeting in Phoenix this week launched a broadside against environmentalists, who the governors and others say have opposed controlled burns that would reduce fire-prone undergrowth.

U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., joined the chorus, saying that environmentalists have pressured Congress not to spend money on the burns. In an interview Sunday with KTAR-AM (620), he said the Forest Service spends 40 percent of its annual budget defending itself against environmental groups.

Ping -- Bill Richardson, the tree-huggers candidate for NM governor, must be asked and pressed on this issue (though I know he'll have some feel-good, wishy-washy answer).

Yup - I called the Red Cross and asked them to contact me if my sis shows up on an evacuee list somewhere. Nothing yet though - I'll keep checking them on my own.
