In a very broad sense, Peeler came across as a more mature and commanding presence. His answers were more direct and concise. Sanford hurt himself by dwelling on this silliness of some company his brother owns that is in the employment business. Peeler talked and acted in a manner befitting a head of state, that being S.Carolina.

Sanfraud was born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He has been lying about "growing up on my family's farm in SC" since he started running for this office. He is an outsider...a phoney...a complete fraud. He spent the 80's living in NYC and down at Hilton Head "Renaissance Weekends" with the other "new south" democraps like clinton and only became a born again conservatiove when he moved to SC to run for Arthur Ravenel's seat. I would vote for Hodges before him.....same result, (a moderate democrat) except you know what you're getting with Hodges.

During the debate, he was asked what he would do to help seniors with prescription costs. Sanford answered that he would get more money made available to them. That sounded a lot like a non conservative approach. In fairness, Peeler didnt have a great answer either. Perhaps because there is no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to medical costs.

I remember asking in Arthur Ravenel in 1988 why he voted for a bill that had a lot of "pork" in it. He said it also had "pork" for our district. If that is the reasoning then Robert Byrd is a good senator, he votes for pork for his state. Mark Sanford voted against wasteful spending (100% rating by Citizens Against Government Waste) whether it was somewhere else or in his district. He promised to impose term limits on himself, and KEPT HIS PROMISE.
Bob Peeler has been running ads that are so misleading I would not trust him further than I can throw Ted Kennedy. He is also having others run these ads while denying that he is behind them. It's just a coincidence that all the people he uses in his campagin are also involved in these attacks.
Peeler ran ads that Sanford voted against the "Breast Cancer" stamp. That's true, but he voted no because postal officials admitted that almost all the money would go to administrative costs. Later Sanford was able to have the bill reworked so that more dollars actually went to research. That bill passed.
When Sanford first ran for congress I did not support him in the primaries. After seeing him in Congress I would vote for him for any office. I lean very libertarian, and I think he leans that way too.

I only caught bits of it...but saw the last one in its entirety. I'm not crazy about Peeler but I absolutely detest Sanford. A few years ago, he called the Marine Corps air station (PI) to complain about the "noise" their jets were making during training maneuvers. Apparently, his swank dinner guests were being disturbed, so the Congressman "asked" they cease operations until his dinner party was over. The nerve of that outsider...born with a silver spoon in his mouth...the gentleman farmer, my big ole butt. He has bill clinton written all over his face. I will vote against him Wednesday.

So, cheer up....we didn't just beat you in football, basketball and baseball...but plenty of others as well. It will take some getting used to but soon enough you will learn to play your role. LOL

Rebelyell sweetie, I don't want to be critical, but, maybe you should go somewhere and sleep it off.

Sanford, unlike Clinton, is not a good debater. His sentences were choppy, answers not clear. He kept saying, "When I was a Congressman" to start his answers. It was obvious he was really uncomfortable to me. Slick Willie could debate just about anyone and enjoyed lying so much he thrived on it.

Last night Peeler asked Sanford directly at least twice if Sanford could or would point out just one thing that wasn't factually true in his ads. Sanford answered, direct quote here, "Absolutely Not". Then Sanford would go on to say that votes were taken out of context. How can anyone vote to NOT support our troops overseas and getting rid of Saddam Hussein and think that can be taken out of context? Sanford's immaturity showed bigtime.

Mark Sanford may not be a polished speaker, but he is one the best listeners in politics. On the occasions I have met Mark Sanford at social, as distingished from political, gatherings I was always impressed on how well he listened and tried to bring out the ideas of others, i.e. exactly what a good executive should be.

Good point. I think either of these guys would make an effective leader for SC. Sanford displayed very thin skin during this debate and is hurting himself by whining about his "record" being brought up. Hodges and the democrats will make Peeler's comments look like a lovefest. Can Sanford handle that?

You would be surprised at those who attend Renaissance Weekends. And your post is the answer as to why Hodges will serve another term.As bitter and nasty as this battle has become will turn off Independants to the Republican Party and I dont care how much they come together after Tuesday it wont work.Plus if you think Republicans are forgiving and care so much about your party, ask David Beasley.South Carolina now will have Hodges another four years thanks to Peelers mud slinging and self serving ambition. No need to reply, wait until November and then reply!

I would vote for Hodges before him..... So, in addition to be a chicken-lover, you now admit to being a democrat?
same result, (a moderate democrat) except you know what you're getting with Hodges.
Sanford has 6 years of Congressional record to look at. If that's not enough to "know what you're getting," then I wonder what you think about Peeler?
BTW, I know what we've got with Hodges. Budget disasters; embarassing national grand-standing; a lottery that is taking in more revenues than estimated, yet is somehow not delivering anywhere near the level of scholarships and tax cuts promised (remember the "End Car Taxes - Vote Yes!" bumperstickers?).
As much as I dislike Peeler for his attacks, I would vote for him against Hodges.
True conservatives feel that way.

The more I see of Sanford, the less I like him. Last night he sounded like the perpetual victim with his constant whining about negative ads, just like his buddy McCain. Hey Mark, deal with it. Politics can be rough. You cannot be so thinned skinned.
I think they are pretty close on issues, but I agree that Peeler came across as more mature and commanding. That bit about Sanford's brother's business did not help him either.
Having said all that, if Sanford wins I will certainly vote for him over Hodges. Under no circumstances would I vote for Hodges.
In the other races I have decided on Thomas for Lt. Governor and Richter for AG. but I don't know anything about the candidates for Sec of State. Anyone have any info on that race?

Sanford made himself look pretty stupid when he admitted that he didnt know if he owned part of a company. He said, "I own lots of things, I can't keep track of all of that". Not surprisingly, The State printed an expert analysis of the debate, interviewing 3 university professors (any guess as to their political leanings) and all three gave a slight edge to Sanford. This reminded me of the networks telling all that Gore won the debates with Bush.

Someone noted recently that Peeler had voted for Clinton in 92. This is from the MB Suntimes paper on Sunday. Read it carefully.
After 16 years in public office, Peeler's political record contains its own surprises: He gave $500 in 1988 to a liberal Democratic presidential hopeful and voted in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary;

Peeler:
Donated $500.00 to Dick Gephardt Campaign.
Voted against a resolution supporting prayer in school.
Originally supported lottery.
Peeler voted for Bill Clinton in 1992.
In 1996 wrote a column in State Paper supporting removing the Confederate Flag from Statehouse Dome.
Reason I can not find much of a record:Peeler says his political record was built mainly on building relationships and consensus rather than specific votes.

Peeler voted for Bill Clinton in 1992.
Unless Peeler has publicly announced this, there is no way to confirm its veracity. I went to the paper's archive and the only record they have is that he VOTED in the 92 primary. That is much different than voting for Clinton. Maybe a minor point but facts are facts. Even so, 8 years of watching Clinton may have turned Peeler into an arch-conservative!!!!
