BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A severe shortage of food aid is forcing hungry North Koreans to scrounge for grass and seaweed, the United Nations says.
Warning of a new threat of famine in the communist country, the U.N.'s World Food Programme says hundreds of thousands of North Koreans are abandoning work and school in a desperate effort to stave off hunger.

The UN gives food to North Korea (of course paid by us)? I didn't know that! IMHO, if there was no outside assistance, the corrupt government would have collapsed already.

The three out of 25 children who ate meat recently were no doubt children of the local Commisars.

As long as we keep supporting these insane governments and cultures by supplying free food, these insane governments and cultures will endure, and the plight of the people will worsen. We must have the backbone to stand back and let them starve. There is no ethical alternative.

"In the Communist world, we see failure, technological backwardness, declining standards of health, event want of the most basic kind - too little food. Even today, the Soviet Union still cannot feed itself. . . . East and West do not distrust each other because we are armed; we are armed because we distrust each other. And our differences are not about weapons but about liberty. . . . The most fundamental distinction of all between East and West (sic.) [is that] the totalitarian world produces backwardness because it does such violence to the spirit, thwarting the human impulse to create, to enjoy, to worship. The totalitarian world finds even symbols of love and of worship an affront." Ronald Reagan (June 12, 1987)

North Korea is just another of our unbelievably stupid foreign policy failures. Eisenhower was so anxious to "get the boys home" that he allowed a disastrous "Armistice" to take place. I have lost friends killed in Korea in the 60's and 70's due to this failure of nerve on our part- and now they PROBABLY have at least one nuclear weapon, and can hold Seoul (or Tokyo) hostage.
I hope we remember this when we deal with Iraq and Iran again...

Ah!!!! The virtues of communism.

Since 1995, floods, droughts and tropical storms have exacerbated the country's agricultural and industrial problems. Those damn natural disasters.
It could be worse though. At least they didn't have 70 straight years of weather problems like the Soviet Union did.

Don't you all just
wish that all our local Commies (Maxine Waters, Daschle, Boxer, Kennedy, [insert your favorites here]) could be forced to live over there for two years, just to see for themselves how the "workers' paradise" really feels?
Okay, maybe two years isn't enough... twenty should do it.

i think that is an excellent idea. i would also love to send my m-i-l and her husband to cuba. they've made the statement "cubans don't have it so bad...." however, i don't see them going to cuba for their medical needs or anything else for that matter.

How about we suspend any aid until N. Korea stops its huge investment on its military. Force the country to choose, guns or fed people.
I lived in South Korea, (Seoul) in 1974. The south is an industrious and hard working place where democracy is finally working. The north is a hole. A prison for everyone. As long as we continue to kiss the norths butt they will continue to be a dictatorship.

I'll bet the North Korean warlords and their families aren't starving. If so, send them all those grassy green balls washing up on the shores of NH and SC.

The sheeple can't revolt if they don't have the strength to wield a hoe. (Isn't Kim Jong-il a bit on the pudgy side? Too much rich food in the palace and no food at all on the plates of the people.)

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A severe shortage of food aid is forcing hungry North Koreans to scrounge for grass and seaweed, the United Nations says. This is a typical Commie News Network opening sentence.
I'll change it to something more realistic, like: A severe shortage of democracy and free enterprise are forcing hungry North Koreans to scrounge for grass and seaweed, rational people say.

So how are the missile plant workers, atom bomb plant workers and the bio-labworers and their famelies doing. I'll bet that they all have 3 big hots and a cot.
