Newspaper can be used to great advantage to start flower beds or extend their boundaries. It will form forming a barrier that kills existing vegetation and then rots away, improving the soil as it does.

To start, closely crop the existing grass or vegetation and then place a generous layer (about 10 sheets thick) of newspaper on the ground.

"If your screename is accurate, you've probably been aware of this type of behavior for a while. The next stage after garden gnomes is usually plastic flamingoes and gazing balls. :-)"

Screename is very correct, but I wouldn't have a "pink" ornament of anykind in our garden, let alone a flamingo. These statues are very heavy ceramic and painted gray, kind of nice. And BTW, the pond wall sits about 4ft off the ground and about 31/2ft of water, we are getting ready to do the top edge. Thinking about making it wide enough to sit.

Would anyone have any sugestions on how to spif up a small, round brick pond. We built it after seeing someone that spent a fortune for theirs, ours we did ourselves. It is about 2ft deep and we will put some sort of fountain in the middle.

HEHEHE!

FYI, having the rain gutters empty into your pond is not technically a fountain!

By the way... Does your neighbor have a website?

My Redneck Neighbor

Just kidding.... your description reminded me....

Back in the days before plastic garbage bags my mother used newspapers to wrap smelly garbage like discared chicken parts. The mulch idea is good too, especially good when the papers are used BEFORE reading.

I'd get a local sculptor to modify the heads to look like Carville & Begalla. Then I'd get holes drilled in the mouths and hook them up by tubing to a water pump so they could spout off for the rest of time.

Even better if the pump picks up lots of algae.

Re: Post #24 - My Redneck Neighbor

Oh Hair, that is the funniest website!! I don't think Mom_Grandmother's pond will be quite so, uh, inventive as the one shown!

Garden gnomes are very hip now. Lawn jockeys are still too un-PC.

If anyone does the garden gnome thing, beware the GNLF! (That's the Garden Gnome Liberation Front). Click on this recent FR thread to see what they can get up to.
