What happens if I just lay my driver's license on a magnet to demagnetize the strip?

It isn't a magnetic strip, it's a 'smart chip'; an encrypted computer chip.

Also, see post #26. The bill has a 20 year sentence for tampering with or destroying any part of the card.

It also says you can get 20 years for reading the contents of the microchip.
