Congress Holds Hearings on Unions
The Associated Press ^ | 6/21/2002

WASHINGTON- Where you stood on unions may have depended Thursday on where you stood on Capitol Hill.

At a Senate hearing, a Louisiana mariner told sympathetic Democrats about the harassment and threats he said workers faced from boat companies when they tried to unionize. "It shouldn't be this hard to form a union," said Eric Vizier of Galliano, La.

On the opposite side of the Capitol, a very different union tale was unfolding at another sympathetic hearing - this time in front of House Republicans.

An Ohio school psychologist talked of being forced to join and subsidize a union that supports political issues she opposes, such as abortion rights. "The union threatens to take my job away unless I violate my religious beliefs," said Kathleen Klamut, who works for Ravenna City Schools. "The union claims it has the power to do this."

The dueling congressional hearings illustrated election-year politics with both Republicans and Democrats playing to their supporters. The parties are vying for control of Congress in November's elections.

At the Senate hearing, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney pressed Democratic allies to take on an overhaul of the nation's labor laws. "For the past 25 years, businesses have been twisting, manipulating and ignoring our country's labor laws and getting away with it," he said. "Even when they get caught, the penalties are so weak and the process so unfair that few, if any, are ever held accountable for their actions."

It's illegal for an employer to fire a worker for supporting a union organizing campaign. The punishment requires an employer to reinstate the worker with back pay - minus earnings from a replacement job. If an employer oversteps boundaries in mandatory group meetings or in one-on-one supervisory meetings, the penalty simply requires the employer to post a notice saying it violated the law and won't do it again, said Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., who is facing a tough re-election campaign against Republican Norm Coleman. Many companies now view such penalties "as a routine cost of doing business, well worth it to get rid of organizing leaders and derail workers' organizing efforts," Wellstone said.

Nancy Schweikhard, a nurse in Oxnard, Calif., told the committee that she and her co-workers were pulled away from patient care duties to attend mandatory anti-union meetings with hospital officials. The hospital also spent money on anti-union consultants instead of funding health care needs, she said. "I do not believe that workers should have to climb mountains to choose a union," Schweikhard said. "We should not have to fear for our jobs or our families."

Over in the House, Republicans heard testimony claiming that unions illegally used dues money to fund political activities.

Landmark Legal Foundation President Mark Levin said the National Education Association, the nation's largest teachers union, failed to accurately disclose to the IRS and the Labor Department thousands of dollars in dues money it has spent on politics since 1994. Political spending included funds for candidate recruitment and screening, fund raising and political surveys, Levin said.

Bob Chanin, NEA general counsel, said no dues money has been contributed to candidates. However, he said, unions by law are allowed to spend dues money to communicate with their members, which includes informing them of political issues.

Republicans still objected to that. "Citizens of this country cannot be forced to contribute to causes which violate their religious beliefs or with which they disagree for other reasons," said Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Georgia, chairman of the House Workforce Protections subcommittee. "I continue to be frustrated by the failure of unions to honor these basic American principles."

They're SOCIALIST! Hello? Share the wealth of the business they've managed to latch onto?
Like a parasite eating away at it's host.

Good. Let's cut all social spending. I object to that. It isn't right to covet they neighbors goods!

The hearings were great! It was kind of funny that the only people that got to watch them had BroadBand connections (CSPAN internet feed).

Looks like the Republicans were using it as a set up for another run at a national 'right to work' act. Levin has a pretty good case IMHO.

I am dead set against Public Service employee Unions, they hold the local taxpayers and governments hostage.

Here in the Buffalo area the unions have all to much control and the politicans are to blame for it, the city is 270 million in the hole and the unions will not concede anything as a matter of fact they are demanding more..

I once told the Supervisor of the town i live in that,

The day you told me that you could not lay off an employee due to union protections, is they day you admitted to me that you have surrenderd control of the government to the unions and that is not only Unconstitutional it's illegal..

I have yet had a politican disagree with me but none of them have the balls to do anything about it. After all they need the campaign contributions..

"Bob Chanin, NEA general counsel, said no dues money has been contributed to candidates."

Excuse me if I'm incredulous.

This effort will deliver at least one good thing. It will allow congressional leaders to subpeona documents that have heretofore been "sealed" by judges who are protecting the teachers union.

EXPOSE THE LEFT.

The day you told me that you could not lay off an employee due to union protections,

We had a huge A&P Food packaging plant in our area. It employed thousands of workers on a 24/7 schedual.
Every year, the union took time off to protest for more of the wealth through freebies or raises.
The last time they protested the company said "Enough. No more."
They continued to protest as the company was moving out the machines and packing them on trucks.
The huge building is now empty, and the A&P plant is now set up with a cheaper labor force somewhere else.
The union and it's socialist leaders helped the workers lose their jobs. Thousands of them were suddenly unemployed - as it should be.

Now, the only way to stop the union protection of government workers is to reduce the size of government so they're no longer necessary - which most aren't necessary already! School choice would rid us of the protected teachers union and bring in better workers to replace them.
It's time to say "Enough. No more!"

A&P Food Markets I remember them well, my Aunt was a executive secretary for them..

I was born and raised in Mass, home town Hopkinton.

Unions are destroying the country and the government is enabeling them by a free trade and open market system.

Call me a protectionist, that I am, but as the unions keep demanding more and more the companies keep leaving and going to third world nations.

Is this akin to Atlas Shrugging or Atlas beginning to shrug?

We were opening a store in a major mall on Long Island and were forced to use union carpenters to install our metal fixtures. Normally we did it ourselves. I asked one of them how much they could make a year. When he said over $100,000, I was shocked but had to smile when he quickly added , of course there is no work.

At Ford (Engineering) I regularly got "written-up" by UAW members for walking over to the shipping dock and retrieving parts I was looking for - rather than wait several days for the delivery guy to bring them by.
The *sswipe guy writing me up got 4 hours O.T. for each case.
Just the cost of doing business.

Ravenna City Schools.

That's that town where a woman killed a pregnant woman and cut her open to steal her unborn baby, isn't it?

Well, no.  Unions hate free trade.  They love tariffs
and barriers to foreign goods.  Only a captive customer
can be relied on to pay ever-increasing labor costs.

I faced a similar problem with CWA and IBEW at PacBell. I'd waited weeks to get some RS232 cables pulled between machines. It wasn't getting done and my deadlines were approaching. I pulled the lines myself to each machine, then left the DB25 connector "in the wood" i.e. unconnected to the computer. I then called the union craftsman to come in a connect all the DB25 connectors. It took 15 minutes and he got credit for a whole day's work. I met my deadlines. Nobody was written up.

In contrast, I had a 212 modem that was mis-optioned. It kept falling into remote loopback when noise hit the line. That was causing my TVI-970 terminal to go nuts and trash everything in my current vi editor screen. I moved a single switch to fix the problem. The CWA steward gave me a ration of S**T. Minutes later, dialtone on my primary phone line at my residence was cut in the central office. I called 611 to report what happened. The union buttheads "fixed" the cut line by turning over tip and ring. I had dialtone, but my touch tone keypads wouldn't function. I had to call them again. Unions suck.

My other "pleasant" union experience happened when I went to work doing marine electronics repair in the San Diego shipyards. The unions insisted that everyone join IBEW or they would walk out. My company paid the dues, but the union wanted new "members" to pay them $60 "initiation fee" and listen to their propaganda at the union hall. My budget was tight and I delayed paying the fee. The union thugs broke into my car, sawed all the way around my new in-dash stereo. About $1200 damage. The other person in the company had all his windows knocked out with a baseball bat and $400 in camera equipment stolen from his vehicle. Great PR from the IBEW. Unions have earned my life long enmity by these acts.

A Labor Union is a corporation for profit, just like General Motors or Enron. Nothing more, nothing less. Why do think that Union Fatcats (that's what they are) behave the way they do?

You are right on track. If you would like more information, please come and visit the Public Service Research Foundation's web site at "http://www.psrf.org". I particularly invite your attention to "Beyond Public Sector Unionism..." under "Issues," which includes "The Case Against Public Sector Unionism."
