[history]
Government auditors said Thursday they had discovered the Ministry of Defense had valued 1,175 brass nuts at a staggering $122 million, or $104,000 each.
After a little stocktaking, the auditors valued the whole collection of hardware at just $1.73, just 14 cents per nut.

With the continued dominance of Tony Blair and his Labour friends, I can see why brass nuts would be at such a premium. Pity the Tories can't seem to find any....

Auditor and Comptroller General Sir John Bourn, who heads the audit office, said the defense ministry must curb its compulsion to hoard. Well, wouldn't you hoard if you could collect nuts valued at $104.000 each? Maybe they had dreams of making a killing on Sotheby's?

Royal Air Force's hoard of $60 million worth of fuel tanks, a 440-year supply at current usage rates, And how many years' supply is that at wartime usage rates??? Hmmmm??? Bloody bean-counters....

For your information: These nuts are usually gleaned from the fabled brass monkeys, after a heavy arctic winter.

The math doesn't work. Obviously, the AP reporter took his math classes as the same school as did the military inventory keepers.

But the real question is whether or not they were big brass ones.

Not much room for the author of this article to talk. And a bit of evidence to the state of public education which possibly contributed to this problem:
....1,175 brass nuts ... the auditors valued the whole collection of hardware at just $1.73, just 14 cents per nut.
Are we to believe that .14 cents times 1,175 equals $1.73?
