Detroit Cup City
After a dominating season, Detroit stands tall above them all. The Red Wings took home the Stanley Cup by defeating Carolina 3-1. Tomas Holmstrom and Brendan Shanahan scored in the second, and the incomprable Dominik Hasek made 16 saves. Detroit claimed its third Stanley Cup in six years and the 10th in franchise history. Scotty Bowman notched his record ninth Cup, one more than his mentor, former Montreal coach Toe Blake, and as many as any coach in any major pro sport.

Just ignore some of the losers on this thread Dan. Must be fans of one of the teams that haven't won anything in 80 years. Congrats Red Wings!

can't even insult some folks. now that the cup has been purchased, maybe several of those hired guns can retire.Kinda like Colorado trading for Roy (just as Detroit traded for Hasek) and acquiring Blake, Bourque, etc. and winning cups in '96 and 2001. Or Dallas acquiring Hull and winning in '99. Etc.
If you're going to criticize teams for "buying" Cups, you had better be consistent. Detroit's far from the only team that made trades and free agent acquisitions and went on to win the Cup.

@#!$$$#@ *%#@!!!!The only thing better than the Wings winning the Cup is seeing the reaction of the fans of the Colorado Arrogance. Any fans who chant "Red Wings suck" during games against the Nashville Predators have a bit of an obsession problem.

Hockey in June! We need legislation to restrict hockey to natural ice played under sunlight.

Great game! Great series! Go Wings!

I was pulling for ColoradoMe, too. That was the series with the two best teams.
On another thread I picked Detroit in 5, winning four straight. Actually, I figured that the 'Canes would win the first one over either Colorado or Detroit, then get wasted.
Colorado has some great young players. They'll be back, of course.

Hey what's with the dead octopus gag? Some tight security if someone can sneak a smelly octopus into the Stanley Cup finals. Glad no Al Queda thought of packing in an plastik octopus bomb.
Congrates Moter City on finally winning the Cup after such a long time of being bridesmaids. :)

Hasek is the greatest goalie to ever step between the pipes. He is a big complainer and America hater though.
With the addition of the Stanley Cup to his collection, he now has every piece of hardware available to goalie.
What is Detroit going to do without Hasek and Bowman next year? Who is their backup goalie?
And I wouldnt say that Detroit bought the cup with their payroll and luring in big star players. They have just as many original draft pics as the Canes.
I am a Canes fan, a Sabres fan, and a huge Hasek fan (his play, not him personally). I enjoyed seeing Hasek hoist it high a great deal. I like everyone on Detroit except Brett Hull. Brett Hull can suck my ass.

Detroit has as many original draft pics as the Canes. Outside of Hasek, and to a lesser extent Brett Hull (who can suck my ass) I wouldnt call it a "bought team".

Datsyuk is freakin unreal. He will beat you cold and for fun go back and do it a couple more times.

Bridesmaids? We have won the cup 3 times in 6 years and once back to back. Not too bad for a bunch of old geezers.

I was pulling for Colorado.

Outside of Hasek
We gave up Kozlov and one or two #1 picks for Hasek. Hull was purchased, but he took 1 mill less than other offered to play for the Wings. Hull, Luuuuke, and Cruddy Krup are the only high-profile FA's the Wings have signed. The rest were traded for or drafted. They happen to trade for, and draft, very good players, who naturally get better salaries.

We gave up Kozlov and one or two #1 picks for Hasek.Because Detroit won the Cup, Buffalo will get the Wings' 1st round pick in 2003. If Hasek signs for another year, Buffalo gets Detroit's 2nd round pick in 2003. This is in addition to Kozlov and the 1st round pick this year.
Hopefully Buffalo will do something worthwhile with these extra picks, but you never know with Don Luce doing the drafting. Congrats to the Wings!

Now Now.....You know money does buy a team.....Even if their team was a bunch of old guys on the ice.....Guess anything is possible......even pigs flying! :-)
