he strange saga of Abdullah al Muhajir, a/k/a Jose Padilla, took yet another turn this morning, when Internet gumshoes Fuckedworld and Junkyardblog spotted his look-a-like . . . guess where?

In the police drawing of a still-missing Oklahoma City bombing suspect, that's where. Al Muhajir, held since May 8 on accusations that he intended to build and detonate a dirty bomb, is the spitting image of the mysterious John Doe 2, featured in police sketches and long touted by cops as a principal along with Tim McVeigh. Some law enforcement officials have insisted no such suspect ever existed, though witnesses described the second figure getting out of the rental truck with McVeigh seconds before the explosion.

However speculative, this clicks in more ways than one, since McVeigh's lawyer tried to argue in Federal District Court in Denver that the 1995 plot may have had roots in the Philippines among men known to have been Al Qaeda operatives with direct ties to Osama bin laden. Though the judge rebuffed his argument, attorney Stephen Jones said he found people in the Philippines who claimed accomplice Terry Nichols met with terrorists there in the years before the 1995 attack.

Wow, both had two eyes a nose and mouth! Unfortunately, one is plainly caucasian, the other hispanic. The noses and chins are completely different. One appears far more stocky than the other. Except for these and other minor differences, they could be identical twins!

Yup. The chins couldn't possibly be more different; and I mean, that really jumps out at you, you don't have to stare at them to notice massive differences.

What's really driving it is that the picture of Padilla is fairly colorless in the style of the police sketch.

I was working for one of the alphabet networks in their news division the morning this story broke, and was immersed in it for several weeks.

If you think the sketch is inaccurate, go back and look at some of the sketches of the Unabomber and at contemporary photos of Ted Kacynski (sp?).

John Doe #2 was originally identified as a possible Hispanic, then perhaps of Arabic or Middle Eastern descent, then the story faded.

Of particular note is that the government, the Clinton Administration went to great lengths to disassociate the events in OKC from the Arab world.

Pick up a copy of "American Jihad", and read how one of the most hostile Radical Islam cells in the country was meeting in OKC before- and after- the OKC bombing...

Sorry. but the eyes are also much different. Look on the outside eyelids. They point up in the picture and down on the drawing. Not the same guy.

Obviously this does not mean it was not the same guy. The drawing does not match and that would have to be overcome. We all look somewhat alike.

JunkyardBlog is doing some great writing and follow-up research on this but FWIW it does look like Free Republic beat the bloggers by about 12 hours in noticing and posting the photo similarity.

Of course we all know bloggers and journalists don't scope out FR for story links and ideas ;) It would be nice if credit was given when they do -- just like when an individual blog is given credit for an original idea. In this case most likely it was just great minds thinking alike.

I think any general tendency to pull ideas from FR without mentioning the source is due to a FR post being seen by non-members as an anonymous source of information that won't notice if someone takes an idea without credit.
