Maury Troy Travis, accused of killing two women and linked by court documents to the deaths of five more, was found dead Monday night in his cell at the St. Louis County jail in Clayton, sources said.
A 10th (victim) was found May 25 when the letter to the Post-Dispatch led police to a skeleton in the West Alton area of St. Charles County."The letter was critical to our case," Hegger said.

Family enjoyment is not the purpose of punishment. I would think that families of murder victims probably do not view the incarceration of the murderers as adding to the families' enjoyment. Death's a relief to plenty of these folks. Why not twist the knife with a life sentence of labor and no TV?
I would say rather that the execution of the murderer is probably a relief to the murder victims' families. After all, why should the murdere be allowed to take another breath, to look at the night sky, or for that matter, to experience anything whatever on this earth when the victim has been robbed of all those things.
And I add that if the murderer dies in his sins, unjustified and unforgiven, death and Hell will be no relief to him.
I don't believe in prisons anymore. If a crime worthy of death is committed then execute the perpetrator. If it's a crime not worthy of death, make the criminal pay restitution several times over. If they don't have enough take whatever they have and exile them. If it's none of the above, then it probably isn't a crime in the first place. There is no reason to warehouse all these criminals, except pretrial in jails like the brand spanking new one in St. Louis County.
Cordially,
The news reports don't go into detail, but these women were held captive in his home and tortured before they were murdered and dumped.
On a side note, this man and I believe all of his victims were black. I think statistically this is highly unusual in that most serial killers are white men if I'm not mistaken.
What I want to know is, why would he have tipped the cops off to that one victim?
Yep. No trial. No whining lawyers. No appeals. No whining lawyers. No candlelight vigils held by psycho-sympathizers. No whining lawyers...
...And many families have some kind of closure. I suppose he killed himself because the police weren't following the case quite the way he wanted, and so he figured he'd give himself a name by ensuring we never now exactly how many, or whom or where, he killed. Still, one less on the streets.
...That too.
It would then be a trivial event to go to a suspect's computer and look through the web cache for that token. Get a hit and you've bagged your man.
If I were a cop, I wouldn't lose much sleep over it. But no, they have to go over moms and sisters.
About nine billion years ago, in a thread about criminals, someone observed that prison studies have shown that criminals in general have a lower IQ than the random population. A science-oriented person simply observed that all the study proves is that criminals who get caught and wind up in prison have a lower IQ in general than the random population... (My only point being that stats can't always be taken at face value.)
In regard to "...most serial killers are white men..." I'm dubious about how the label "serial killer" gets applied by PC officials and statisticians.
It seems to me that if a white person kills multiple people over time, that white person will get assigned the label "serial killer." If a black person kills multiple people over time he'll simply be called a "repeat offender." It seems to me there are an awful lot of black people who are repeat offenders.
Is there a "technical" way of separating people who are "repeat offenders" from people who are "serial killers?"

A more specific profile of a serial killer has been presented by Apsche (1993) stating that most are white males in their twenties or thirties, who target strangers near their homes or places of work. "According to criminologist Eric Hickey, who has assembled the most extensive database on demography of serial murder states that, 88% of serial killers are male, 85% are Caucasian, and the average age when they claim their first victim is usually around 28.5. In terms of victim selection, 62% of the killers target strangers exclusively, and another 22% kill at least one stranger. Finally, 71% of the killers operate in a specific location or area, rather than traveling wide distances to commit their crimes"(Apsche, 1993, p.16). Also, the F.B.I claims that to be classified as a serial killer, the person must first complete 3 separate murders, that are spaced by a duration they call "the cooling off period" which can vary from a few days to years, From I have read on this case, all of his victims were prostitutes and the murders happened within a few years.
They didn't have a suspect, so it wasn't so trivial.
Assuming the map was fairly unsual, and assuming Expedia keeps logs long enough, and assuming his IP was clear and informative, then this isn't too remarkable. In the absence of any one of those things, it's more interesting.
Fair enough, but remember this: Every weapon is dangerous in the hands of a corrupt man (or woman, come to that).
It's not the weapon, whatever its nature or type, but the wielder of whom we should be wary.
Sometimes I wonder what the Germans living in Germany in 1938 thought about the rise of the German state - I wonder if any of them had any thoughts similar to what I think about our imperial federal police state?
That's how the leader of the Chechnyan rebellion was killed.
The United States used a satellite to locate his cell phone,
and then told the Russians where he was.
No more rebel leader.
