EAST WINDSOR, Conn. (AP) _ The April drowning deaths of an Afghani couple in a park pond have been ruled accidental, authorities said.
Mohammad Gumshuda, 53, and his wife, Simmer Hider, both of East Windsor, were found April 18 in about 10 feet of water at East Windsor Park. Relatives said neither one could swim and both were afraid of water.
A spokesman for the state medical examiner's office said Friday that further tests revealed Gumshuda was intoxicated. Hider, who was in her early 20s, also drowned accidentally, the medical examiner's office said.
Police said there were no signs of a struggle and no wounds on the bodies. Alcohol was found at the scene and Gumshuda was taking prescription medication for a recent surgery. Gumshuda was clad only in his underwear, while Hider was fully clothed.
Local suspected the pair were lulled into the water during a 90-degree heat wave.
