Mozilla has finally released their 1.0 final version.Mozilla is the core technology that Netscape uses, however, Mozilla is about four generations more advanced than even the Netscape 7.0 beta that was released last week. (and definitely less kludgy than AOL/Netscape!) In addition, it is an open source browser that seems to keep getting better with time. For me, it hasn't replaced IE, but it certainly lets me do a few things more easily than previously.
One of the biggest pluses to Mozilla is a setting that will allow you to stop child windows from being opened by your browser when you use the web (i.e., no more frazzlin' X10 pop-under ads!).
It may not be enough to replace IE for you, but it is at least worth a look.

Why do you have to change browsers? So long as you have a TCP/IP connection to the 'net, you should be able to use any browser you want (limited by your OS, of course).

Cool - the google toolbar is essential for me.
"View partial source" is the ability to highlight part of a page, and then view the HTML for that part only. It really comes in handy when posting articles.
Thanks!

I'd say that IE runs equally well on both platforms Depends which MacOS you're using. There's been some widely reported problems with IE's rendering time in OSX

Thanks for the info on the themes. Looking for some at this very moment.

This sounds good but there needs to be a way to allow pop-up windows on certain sites. Web productivity applications need these for dialog boxes I have the pop-up's disabled in my mozilla 1.0rc3, and pop-ups do work on most sites that use them in a legit manner. I think what mozilla is doing is blocking pop-up's that are not from the same host as the one you are currently viewing.
So say for example, here on FR.com, if a pop-up tried to open an X10 banner from another host, it would fail. If FR.com opened a pop-up from FR.com it would display.
I don't know this for a fact, those are just my observations.
The odd time I run into a site this doesn't work it, and then I just disable the setting and reload the page and it's fine, and when I'm done I re-enable it.
I haven't gotten any annoying ad banners since I turned it on, and I've been happy with it.

I think the logo is a joke. It's probably just to make fun of the people that say OSS=Socialism. Anyone with a brain knows that OSS is based off the ideals of social anarchism and not socialism.

I meant the logo from the release party. It looks a bit communist-inspired to me.
It's got the Communist Party star, the oppressed Bolsheviks, etc. All it's missing is the hammer and sicle. Just when you thought Communism was dead ...

No, it's based on collective ownership of property; hence, the analogy to Communism.

Social anarchism is the melding of socialism with anarchism. People come together and freely implement a commune that controls the factory. There is no state to control how much it produces. That is why OSS is not Communistic, there is no central government-like organization that says "you there, write a HTML renderer!!" People freely participate in it.

I don't see any OSS developers trying to set up a system where you cannot buy commercial software. I see Microsoft trying to coerce OEMs into not bundling any OSS whatsoever whether it be OpenOffice or a few BASH utilities like GREP. Face it, you cannot easily map politics to software development. You can be another two-bit pundit that thinks that they can, but anyone who is involved in any way with software development knows how futilie such efforts are. BTW, the GPL isn't the only license that Mozilla is released under. It has been dual licensed under the Mozilla Public License which lets AOL create proprietary versions. Hardly Communistic.

If you belong to the OSS community, it's a lot like being a member of the Communist Party. Nobody forces you to join the Party. But if you want to use the code, you have to abide by its bylaws (aka. license agreement) or they have the federal government kick your ass (aka lawsuits). ;-p

Thanks for the tip! I'm using the new Mozilla right now. So far, so good.

It's "Moe-Zilla." The origin of the name is one of the original web browsers, NCSA Mosaic.

That's the way Microsoft, et al do business as well! Don't tell me you've never noticed EULAs before? You have significantly less rights under a Microsoft EULA than under the GPL or BSD licenses. The GPL let's you modify the software to your needs and give it to anyone you want. If your buddy wants a copy of OpenOffice you can legally give him 50,000 copies if you want. Doing that with MS Office will result in you going to prison if you get caught.

Am using Mozilla for the first time right this minute. After visiting Aint It Cool News and
not being hit by stupid pop-up ads.
The thing works!! And I may never go back to Internet Explorer again. Ever.
