IDF tanks rolled into the West Bank town of Jenin today, hours after the suicide bombing at the Megiddo junction in which 16 Israelis were killed, Palestinian security officials say.
The officials said two dozen armored vehicles drove into Jenin from three directions.
In addition, two attack helicopters fired machine guns toward one neighborhood, witnesses said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
In expectation of an Israeli incursion, Jenin residents quickly left public areas and sought shelter in their homes.
Jenin, a militant stronghold, has been the target of repeated Israeli raids in recent months, including a brief incursion Monday.
During Israel's six-week military offensive against Palestinian militias, which ended last month, the Jenin refugee camp adjacent to the town was the scene of the fiercest fighting.
Wednesday's bombing was carried out by the Islamic Jihad group. Members of Islamic Jihad's military wing said the assailant was from the Jenin area, but would not give his name for fear of Israeli reprisals against his family.

The Islamic mindset, however it's sliced down, has no regard for the individual. Indeed, it's strength is greatest when there is no individual: the soul must be obliterated so that the flesh is added to the collective entity that is Allah's will on earth. If a Muslim blows himself/herself up, there is no "mourning" as the civilized world knows, but rather rejoicing that the incorporate might of Islam has weathered a blow of its own design.
To be a Muslim is to lose one's soul by choice. And if a person is willing to vanquish one's own being, how much easier it becomes to vanquish others. THAT is why Islam is the most destructive disease that history has ever known.
Real soldiers usually want some chance of survival in a risky mission. That wouldn't prevent some "special deliveries," however. The requirement that the detonator stick around is Palestinian fashion, and not necessary to the fact of an explosion. A human detonator gets to discriminate among his targets so he can kill indiscriminately. Planted explosives, or aerially delivered ones can also be effective.
