What a great crowd. I don't think that you can go anywhere in the country and find a group of Democrats more loyal ... more resilient ... more enthusiastic than those right here in the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
How many other states can claim a monopoly of Democrats in their Congressional delegation? 12 Democrats; 0 Republicans. Just as it should be. My only disappointment is that half of our House delegation hasn't had the privilege of serving in the majority. But we're going to do something about that on November 5th.
How many other states can claim this kind of Democratic Hall of Fame? John F. Kennedy ... John McCormack ... Tip O'Neill ... Eddie Boland ... Ted Kennedy ... Michael Dukakis ... Paul Tsongas ... Joe Moakley ... and countless others.
Including our friend John Kerry. He has been an extraordinary leader for Massachusetts and the nation. He has fought for a higher minimum wage ... for workplace protections ... for a clean environment. And John Kerry doesn't need to be lectured by Republicans about the sacrifices of war ... or about what it means to be a patriot.
It says something about John Kerry's service that the only Republican willing to take him on this year is a high school football coach who's struggling just to get on the ballot. It's my pleasure tonight to endorse John Kerry. And if I use those words any time after November of this year ... I have a feeling it'll make big news.
My friends, I'm very excited about the 2002 elections. We're going to pick up House seats for the fourth election cycle in a row and put Dick Gephardt in the Speaker's chair. We're going to hold and expand our majority in the U.S. Senate. And with 36 states choosing a chief executive, we are going to seize a majority of the nation's governorships for the first time since 1994.
There's no bigger governor's race than the one right here in Massachusetts. And my friends, there's absolutely no reason why Republicans should continue their 12-year grip on the corner office.
We have five outstanding candidates for Governor, representing an incredible diversity of experience. As I speak, the jockeying for advantage is going on between the different campaigns. But let's remember that the contest for this nomination isn't nearly as important as the race this fall.
Let's have a vigorous competition and lively debate for the Democratic nomination. But beginning on the evening of September 17th ... let's put aside any grudges ... raising our hands in solidarity ... united behind the one candidate who can and will beat Mitt Romney.
Can we talk about Mitt for a second? Were you as impressed as I was that People Magazine named him one their 50 Most Beautiful People? Seriously folks, I think I know Massachusetts well enough to say that the people here will take a tough and effective politician over a pretty one every day of the week. It's great to have a nice jawline ... but don't come to play in Massachusetts politics if you have a glass jaw.
I've got a few questions about Mitt Romney. Until a few months ago, had anyone heard from him since Ted Kennedy cleaned his clock eight years ago? What does he stand for, other than leveraged buyouts and building his stock portfolio? Which Mitt Romney wants to govern Massachusetts -- the pro-lifer that ran in 1994 or the pro-choice moderate we're seeing now? And how is it that Republicans can continue to insist that they're pro-woman and pro-working mother ... yet they dropped Jane Swift like a bad habit?
What is Mitt Romney's plan to rescue Massachusetts from the fiscal havoc wreaked by more than a decade of Republican rule? Does Mitt Romney really want to govern Massachusetts for a full term ... or will he be like two of his Republican predecessors and seek out other opportunities?
Why does Mitt Romney spend a couple of days in Italy on Olympic business ... when he should be getting to know the people of Massachusetts? Hey Mitt, forget about the Italians in Turin ... how about getting to know some of the Italians on the North End of Boston?
And finally, the most important question of all: Mitt Romney, who do you root for when the Celtics play the Utah Jazz?
I don't want to get into the whole residence thing but I'll just say this: we never sent Billy Bulger to run for office in Utah ... you'd think Mitt Romney would know better than to use Massachusetts as a pawn in his little game of ambition.
Folks, I'm very bullish about this race and about the November elections in general. I'm bullish because the Republicans have no real accomplishments to run on. To distract us from their bad choices and broken promises, the President and other Republicans have tried to use the war as a partisan political prop, claiming that we need to elect more Republicans in order to defeat the forces of terror.
But aside from being a dangerously divisive argument, it's also completely absurd. Does anyone seriously think electing Mitt Romney is critical to the war effort. What's he going to do -- lure them out of their caves with an Olympic Gold Medal?
Republicans want to make the war a campaign because they have no fresh ideas to present to the American people ... because they have no solutions to our domestic policy challenges ... because they have no agenda that reflects the values of working families.
In a way, I feel sorry for the Republicans. What choice do they have? If not the war, what are they going to run on? Are they going to run on their plan to privatize Social Security, cut benefits and gamble Americans' retirement money on a volatile stock market? Are they going to run on their Medicare prescription drug plan that leaves out 94 percent of seniors? Are they going to run on their plans to contaminate our air and water and then stick taxpayers with the clean-up bill?
And what about education? Were you as outraged as I was when President Bush made a big show of bipartisanship on the education bill ... and then proceeded to cut funding for everything from school modernization to teacher training. For crying out loud, Ted Kennedy did all the heavy lifting of putting the legislation together. All the President had to do was make sure the money was there, and he couldn't even do that.
My friends, only Democrats are willing to address the important kitchen- table issues that Americans care about. Only Democrats are committed to strengthening Social Security. Only Democrats are committed to improving education ... providing pension security ... and protecting the environment. Only Democrats are committed to cutting prescription drug costs ... so that seniors in New England don't have to trek up to Canada to get affordable medication. Only Democrats are committed to securing America's future for all our families and not just the privileged few.
Folks, we can win, and we're going to win. The fact is that Americans want Democrats in Congress and in statehouses as a check against Republican special interest excesses. They know it's Democrats who stopped Enron from getting a $250 million tax break. They know it's Democrats who are keeping extremist reactionaries off the federal bench. They know it's Democrats like John Kerry who are keeping the oil companies from drilling in the Alaskan wilderness.
Republicans call that obstructionism. But their definition of an obstructionist is someone who disagrees with them ... someone who refuses to hop aboard the special interest gravy train. They can call it obstructionism if they like. I call it conviction. I call it principle. I call it leadership.
It's that kind of leadership that's going to carry us to victory in November. Watch out, George Bush. When you wake up on the morning of November 5, the first thing you'll see is screaming headlines about a Democratic sweep. I'd suggest you go back to sleep and pull the covers over your head ... because we're coming after you next. Let's go out and make it happen. Thank you very much.
Terry McAuliffe = Barf
Massachusetts = Barf
Democrat State Convention = Barf
June 1, 2002 = Alert.
I thought I already had it covered!
Well, try. Miss Marple came up with a couple of new Keywords for the next McAuliffe post.

I would like to see a concerted effort to cause this guy to self-destruct. One would think that the black people in the party would be aggravated that the former Mayor of Atlanta was shoved aside for this doofus, who has never held elected office. It is sort of like Cuomo and McCall in New York. Cuomo is doing a nice job of living up to his family's reputation and alienating a lot of democrats.
I think it is time that McAuliffe got the same kind of exposure.
This buffoon is more dangerous to America than a squadron of Al Quaeda suicide pilots.
In his America, only elite liberals are entitled to stock market wealth.
In his America, a one party state controlled by Democrats is desirable.
In his America, one can bash an opponent's appearance if you are a Democrat.
In his America, the big Democrat lie is the only tactic that ever works.
We've seen McCaulliffe's kind before. The Nazi's called him Goebels.
Seems like the "evil" fled from Soviet Russia and has taken seed in the new Democrat Party of Clinton, Gore, Hillary, et al!!!
OK. I won't lecture John Kerry. He served.
The rest of you cowardly, American-Hating, crude, manipulative, sexually perverted, lazy, socialistic, greedy scum I'll lecture to.
You ought to be ashamed to be Americans.
