Where is the vaunted power of FR to "get the word out"? Patience. These things take time. It ain't like making a Cup-a-Soup.

Already signed the petition and have petitioned the white house to fire Mineta and arm pilots. (Have not heard a reply though.) Incidentally, I also sent this message back to the RNC solictation mailing, (without the $$ they wanted.) This is so clear it is surprising that W does not get it. 80 % of pilots say they want the right to carry and would take the training, 15% say they would not take the training but have no problem with other pilots being trained. 5 % say they don't want guns in the cockpit. And W is listening to those 5 %???

That's right--if I were the President, I would have fired Mineta long ago. Perhaps W can't fire him for some reason--but even then, if I were in his position, I would use the opportunity to speak out against such suicidal PC behavior. I think 9 out of 10 people would agree--quite an effective way of scoring points with the electorate, isn't it!

Gunshots at 20 000 feet in the air... hum...sounds like a bad idea to me. Don't you believe in the Second Amendment? People have the right to bear arms--that is, the government is banned from banning guns. And there is a very good reason for this. I wouldn't want to live in any country where I am not allowed to defend myself. (And no, I'm not an American, either.)
Would you care to explain why gunshots at 20,000 feet are a bad idea? Would the same be a bad idea on the ground, say in a train or bus? A bank?
Welcome to Free Republic, by the way. If you spend enough time here--and abstain from posting things that might make you considered a disruptor--you will understand our way of thinking. Cheers!

Terrorists aren't nice. It's time we quit being nice to them!

Comment #56694:
What, exactly WOULD be the "downside" of arming pilots? And who needs security more: the shoppers at a mall, or 300 or so passengers on a plane?

Won't sign it, bad idea, will induce false sense of security. Make the cockpit safer but don't ask the pilot to play sherif. Gunshots at 20 000 feet in the air... hum...sounds like a bad idea to me. Sounds like another incredibly stupid liberal to me.
Suppose you were on a highjacked plane, and the highjackers were beating down the cockpit door. Would you feel safer knowing that the pilot and copilot were just as unarmed as you?
I didn't think so!

I think 9 out of 10 people would agree--quite an effective way of scoring points with the electorate, isn't it! Yes, those who think Bush is operating with a clever master plan sometimes hint that he is simply controling the timing of announcements such as this to gain political advantage. G-d I hope so. This one was a no-brainer ever since the people stopped flying. BTW, I still won't fly. Not until the odds tip in my favor. (I don't mean the odds of being on a plane and the plane being attacked, I mean the odds of being on a plane which is attacked and the attackers being killed or subdued without mishap to the plane or passengers.)
