FReeper Sleuths! Gary Condit and the Mystery of the Chandra Levy Pinky Ring!

From the New York Post:

"Police believe this missing tiny pinkie ring could be the key to solving the Chandra Levy murder case.

A gift from her mother, Susan in 1998, it was one of the 24-year-old Bureau of Prisons intern's most cherished possessions and her family has said she wore it constantly.

The 14-carat gold ring was bought for $416 and has two diamond chips and the initials "CL" inscribed.

But it was not among the personal items found during the extensive police search of the wooded hillside in Rock Creek Park where Levy's remains were discovered last week, Washington police spokesman Joseph Gentile said yesterday. "

After doing an exhaustive search of my own image archive, I could only find one image where Chandra is shown wearing a ring (below left). This ring happens to be on her ring finger and NOT on her pinky as has been reported in the press. Certainly, it may be a different ring, but it might just be the one described above and pictured below.

In this thread, FReepers brigette and Helen, along with others, were discussing this ring and the ring on Condit's finger found in the photo below . I have also searched my personal news photo archive and simply cannot find another photo of Condit wearing ANY rings..or any ring at all!

Now, some would say that Condit would be insane to wear Chandra's ring, but I say he's a nut, and at this point in the investigation (I believe, August of 2001), a point where he took a little swipe at a photographer, he had this small ring on his finger? And if you were the guilty party and had the ring, what better place to keep it but on your very own finger.

Was this an act of Providence? Coincidence? Maybe both. But either way, I'd like to see, and the police should certainly see, an enlargement of that photo with Condit wearing a tiny little ring on his pinky finger.

So what gives FReepers? Can any of you find an image of Condit where he is wearing a ring on ANY of his fingers?

There is your mission!

(BTW, yes, I spell Pinky with a "y")

According to a Washington Post article linked here earlier today, (or yesterday?), a pair of broken sunglasses were recovered at the scene. I honestly don't know if they were hers or not, but I would think the police must think they are or they wouldn't have listed them with the other items.

Here's the email, I hope it doesn't get kicked back!

Dear Stephen,

My name is Rich and I post as "Registered" on the FreeRepublic.com website. We have been discussing an issue that I believe you can help us with because it concerns an image that you took of Congressman Gary Condit. I know you remember the image well, the one where he was trying to '"karate' chop'" you? :-)

The thread where we are discussing the image can be found at the link below:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/692054/posts

The reason this has peaked our curiosity is the fact that your image shows Condit with a ring on his pinky. I have searched every image that I could find of him wearing a ring, there is not one that can be found, except for your image. This relates to the fact that the Washington Times reported initially that Chandra Levy's ring was found with her skeletal remains in the shallow grave at Rock Creek Park. Now subsequent reports have stated the ring was missing. The news outlets have been reporting this ring as a "pinky ring" , however we have done a search and the only ring ever shown in any Chandra Levy photo was on her RING FINGER. So, it is possible that this ring could fit on the pinky of a man...named Gary Condit. Therefore, if the ring was indeed found with Levy's remains as was initially reported, and if Condit had the ring on his finger in July or August of 2001 when you snapped that great photo, then this may be an indication he had knowledge of her "whereabouts".

Knowing that you are the photographer of this image, I thought that you may have a much higher resolution image that may show more detail than what has been posted in the above discussion thread.

Can you help?

Best Regards to you.

Rich

This sure does make the theory that she was "taken",
(quote from Billy Martin on LKL this week), from her
apartment much more likely. Probably in the very early
morning hours when there were very few people out and about. 4:00 a.m. scream?

But what about the e-mail she sent to her parents 5/1/01 around 10:30 a.m. (I think it was.)
The parents have never questioned that it might not have been from her.

This was dated May 24th in Newsmax

Ramsey said police recovered most of a skeleton, articles of clothing and personal effects, including a size-8 running shoe, a sports bra and T-shirt, that led them to believe the body was that of a woman and could be Levy's. Investigators had believed the remains were those of Levy even before the dental match,
because one of the items found near the skeleton was a gold ring engraved with the initials "C.L.," the Washington Times reported Thursday. The ring was found in a shallow grave with some of the remains, the Times quoted a law enforcement source as saying.

Did they not know what they were talking about? Was it another ring?

A RING OF TRUTH (Chandra's Missing Ring)

"May 22, 2001 Chandra Levy's remains were found on a wooded hillside in Rock Creek Park by a man walking his dog..."

"The body was identified from dental records. Investigation at the scene produced Chandra's ring bearing the initials "CL". [Emphasis mine.]
The Chandra Levy Chronology (Rev. #9)

They found a ring bearing CL initials.

No. (# 277.) These theories which have the killer enter her apartment after the deed is done and play Chandra on the computer for 3 hours on May 1, are too literary. Such elaborate plots appear only in crime literature. Without these literary devices Sir Conan Doyle's and Dame Agatha's works would be unexceptional. In real life, I think, moider is messy and is something to be done with as quickly and efficiently as possible. Professional hitmen hit and run with good planning, amateurs hit and scramble.

See paragraph #2 280. It could have been a hoax. Also a coverup of someone taking her computer and clearing off materials they didn't want readily available. Sure do hope the FBI checks out the hard drive and not just what is easily obtainable. They had days to do this remember: No one was looking for her.

From the NY POST:

The 14-carat gold ring was bought for $416 and has two diamond chips and the initials "CL" inscribed.

But it was not among the personal items found during the extensive police search of the wooded hillside in Rock Creek Park where Levy's remains were discovered last week, Washington police spokesman Joseph Gentile said yesterday.

Interesting...hmmmm.

So NewMax was just rereporting from the Times???? I just didn't remember hearing "one size eight shoe" and that they identified her by the ring before the dental records. Maybe I just missed that part.
WHen did the "other shoe" fall?

Actually, I would hope that Mr Boitano has several other pictures in the series, one or more of which might have a better angle of the ring. Don't the motorized cameras that professionals use shoot several frames per second, almost like movie cameras?

Hmm, two reporters getting it wrong at the Washington Times...I don't think so. Something is stinky with this ring.

So, did she meet with her killer as she left the gym? That would mean whoever killed her took her keys and went into her apartment and played Chandra on the internet for some four hours, thoroughly debunking the serial killer Geregos school of thought.

I have similar thoughts about the night she was last seen. Apparently no one saw her or spoke with her again. I believe it was only 8:30PM when she left the gym.
Where did she go?
How did she get there?
What did she do?
What about her internet activity that evening?

It's kind of hard for me to believe she just went home and went to bed. It was too early for bed and she had just done a workout. She should have been energized; not sleepy.

Other than computer activity on the morning of May 1, what indications are there that she ever made it home from the gym?

But what about the e-mail she sent to her parents 5/1/01 around 10:30 a.m. (I think it was.) The parents have never questioned that it might not have been from her.

If she had a "Sent" folder that kept copies of all her emails, it would not be difficult to 'forge' an email to her parents. Most people have a certain style they use in email and it can be different styles to different people.

However, if her computer didn't have copies of emails previously sent, it would not be so easy.
