WASHINGTON- President Bush and several members of his administration will use a series of commencement addresses to urge graduating college students to volunteer in their communities.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Bush will kick off the effort June 14 at Ohio State University. As many as 40 top administration officials will discuss public service in commencement addresses, he said.

On Saturday, Bush is speaking to U.S. Military Academy at West Point graduates to provide an update on the war against terrorism.

Why is W. giving the address at OSU? Because Michigan already had a President Bush do a commencement.

With a translator to help the student body sound out the really hard words.

See you the third weekend of November!

What the hell is a "buckeye" anyway?

It's round on the ends, and high in the middle
Tell me if you know....
Don't you think that's a cute little riddle;
'round on the ends, and high in the middle'?
You can find it on the map if you look high and low.
The 'O's are round, it's 'hi' in the middle,
O-H-I-O, that's the riddle,
'Round on the ends, and high in the middle'.
O-HI-O!

My impressions about football fans in Ann Arbor, 1983-1998:

Illinois: unclear on the concept
Indiana: rather be elsewhere
Wisconsin: intoxicated but friendly
Notre Dame: intoxicated and obnoxious
Penn State: all business
Michigan State: cocky and boisterous
Iowa: resigned
Purdue: see Illinois
Northwestern: pathetic

Ohio State: frustrated.

I neglected to mention that the Buckeye fans were unfailingly polite. You could almost feel sorry for them but, after all, they were Buckeyes.

It's a type of tree that produces a nut that is brown with a darker patch - looks like the eye of a deer - hence the name). It resembles a chestnut but is all but inedible. A small sticker showing a Buckeye leaf cluster is given to Ohio State football players after each game for outstanding individual plays. Star players usually end up with more than half their helmets covered with them by the end of the season.

Not sure why it became the state symbol other than the fact that there used to be tons of them growing all over Ohio.

Also a very delicious (if you like Reeses Cups) and enormously fattening candy which a lot of us make at home for the holidays. Basically, a ball of sweetened peanut butter 3/4 dipped in chocolate. Tastes better than it sounds.

Well its better than Kent State's theme song:

Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming

We're finally on our own

I hear the drummers drumming

Four dead in O-Hi-o!

Fair assessment of our feelings during John Cooper's tenure as head football coach.

Sound yummy. I haven't been to Ohio since I was 8 (en route from visiting Kentucky and on to Pennsylvania). It seemed like such a friendly state to this New Yorker at the time.

How Kind. :-)

I live in NW Ohio, so it's easy to get to Ann Arbor from here - go north 'til you smell it, west 'til you step in it. :-)

A double handful of buckeyes, not to be confused with horsechestnuts which look similar. The buckeye is harder, shinier, and has a more figured appearance. There's also a butterfly called a buckeye and a US Navy aircraft, but the Ohio name comes from the nut.

A lot of New Yorkers attended Ohio State when I was there (mid-70's) as the tuition was much lower than at colleges in NY or any of the East Coast states. Most of them seemed OK with life on the "Big Farm". Columbus and the surrounding region is usually described as "Central Ohio" but it has a very definite southern feel. There is a genuine cultural divide between the north and south of the state, with the border running about one third of the way down from Lake Erie.
