Simon Urges Davis to Decide on
Auto Exhaust Legislation
Says AB 1058 is Another Example of Social Engineering
and Should be Vetoed if it Reaches the Governor's Desk
San Francisco-Gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon today called on Governor Davis to express his position on a bill to regulate restrictions on auto tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases, saying the proposed legislation relies on controversial science and would unfairly restrict the freedom of California consumers.Simon said the legislation, AB 1058 by Assemblywoman Fran Pavley, is flawed because of questionable environmental benefits and if signed into law would delegate rule making to political appointees and state bureaucrats.
"I'm asking the governor to reject the concept and the logic of this bill because its real purpose appears to be social engineering and yet another attempt to force people out of their cars and into public transportation.
"This is an opportunity for Gray Davis to provide leadership and let the public know how he feels about this legislation," Simon said.
AB 1058, now awaiting final passage by the Assembly, would have the California Air Resources Board develop regulations by 2005 to reduce greenhouse gases from motor vehicles.
"This legislation is a thinly veiled attempt to regulate the kind of vehicles Californians are allowed to drive," said Simon. "The state should not have broad power to impose sweeping regulations on auto emissions based on controversial scientific evidence."
Coalition groups that include taxpayer rights, organized labor, large and small business and agriculture interests are opposing the Pavley bill as an attack on consumer freedom.

LOL...
But, as Limbaugh constantly points out, solving problems is not the point of [big] government.
No problemo. Toyota will market a hydrogen SUV next year.
Toyota Hydrogen SUV Announcement
PSST - Buy Toyota Stock!
$75K!!!! For an SUV?!!! Marketted at government and corporations?!!! Any corporation that outfits their fleet with this $75K monstrosity deserves to have their corporate fleet officer tarred and feathered and have the shareholders up in arms and demanding blood. Any government that buys these things better make sure that it can stop an anti-tank round and can accomodate a 50BMG gun and a 155MM smoothbore cannon.
Top speed of 93MPH and a range of 155miles per fill-up?!!! Someone is getting robbed here.
In electric vehicles, its put up to the power generation plant, which could be coal-fired, natural gas, nuclear or hydroelectric. (solar, wind, geothermal and tidal are a very small portion of energy production) Plus, you have losses in transporting energy from one location to another location.
In hydrogren fuel-cells, its in the generation of the hydrogren gas. Hydrogen link says that hydrogen is prepared by
1) steam on heated carbon
2) decomposition of certain hydrocarbons with heat
3) action of sodium or potassium hydroxide on aluminum
4) electrolysis of water
5) displacement from acids by certain metals.
You can bet that all of these methods of generating hydrogen is done through the conventional means of generating energy detailed above.
I guess this means the rivers of BC and Alaska will all be used to generate hydro electricity and ship it out as hydrogen. Very interesting!
You know there are already massive tax credit schemes in the works that will reduce the cost of purchase to less than a conventional vehicle. Uncle Sugar is gonna pick up the tab for the development of alternative energy.
Americans have been fed a line of bull that we have the dirtiest air and are the largest polluter. Ha. Hop on a plane overseas and put that myth to rest.
The only way I would ever support this bill is if every rep in Sacramento agreed to take public transportation and gave up their fleet of limos and Town Cars. Fat chance.
It is the same result as communism. You end up with a ruling political elite with all the perks and privledge while the masses line up at trolly stations and to get bread.
