May 23, 2002 -- BEIRUT - The Hezbollah terrorist group said yesterday it is not planning to attack the United States, but vowed to continue to resist what it calls Israeli occupation of Arab land. The Syrian-backed organization denied a claim this week by Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.), chairman of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, that Islamic groups, such as Hezbollah and Egypt's Islamic Jihad, could be planning to attack America.

Odd as it may seem, I tend to believe Hezbollah on this one. Despite their hatred of the U.S. for its support of Israel, they've always viewed this country as a great place to raise money. For Palestinian hospitals and things like that, of course.

The last thing they want is to jeopardize that flow of cash.

They may be a lot of things, but they ain't stupid. They know that we (along with Israel) would kick them into the middle of the next decade if they pulled that kind of stunt. They see how galvanized the American people have become since 9/11. They know not to mess with the sleeping giant.

The State Department report also criticized Lebanon for failing to hand over Hezbollah operatives who killed U.S. nationals in the 1980s.
