Latinos Joining US Military -- and the Left is P*ssed!
AlterNet ^

Above is from a Leftist website, but it's worth reading. Apparently, the US military is heavily recruiting in the East L.A. barrios -- and the Left is worried. (You hope to build a "Chicano" resistence movement to return California to Mexico, and they off and join the US military).

Does this mean that there won't be any more "K-Rations", instead we'll all get to eat the better tasting "?Que-Rations"?

IIRC, I recall that when a lot of the other immigrant communities (Irish, Italian, etc.) went into the military in big numbers, they really seemed to assimilate better into the U.S.

If so, then this is an encouraging sign, IMHO.

We want funds for college and job training programs, more counselors, and courses in ethnic, womens', and queer studies," said Lester García.

Yes, I am sure Senor Garcia, that when male Latino high school students are asked whether they would like to join the Marines or major in queer studies, they are overjoyed to learn that with Senor Garcia's help they can pursue the second alternative.

I can recommend a good cheese to go with his whine, and a good moose to go with the cheese.

I've said this before and it is applicable here now again. I don't mind all the legal immigration and as long as they wait and take the normal steps I am fine.

Or if they get a visa to work, do so and go HOME! Unless they want to try and come legally. Why is Mexico allowed to flood us over other lands that play by the rules?
That aside!

The Mexican culture is a heavily family oriented one. Most are Catholic Christians.

Point is, at least they are mostly good people to begin with and values like serving in the military makes sense. I am not surprised by that nor that the left is crying over it.
Great find!

The author states that recruiters are "preying" on immigrants working on getting citizenship. I think an immigrant only has to serve 2 years and they get their citizenship. To me, what a better way of getting their citizenship, by service to the country to which they seek to become a part.

Besides that...this is a personal observation because my husband is on recruiting duty, the white middle class kids are not enlisting in droves. I think because their parents don't like the idea of them serving their country. My husband has run into that and I've heard other recruiters tell stories of white middle class kids not telling their parents they had joined till the day they shipped out because their parents were not crazy about the idea. My husband has even had a mother tell him that their son did not need the Army because they had plenty of money.

they really seemed to assimilate better

If that is indeed the case, then it's good news. But if the effect will be having more leftists in the military, then it's not the Left that should be worried!

It's partly the upper classes' prejudice against those who take "the King's Shilling" being some sort of reprobate (a longstanding Anglo-American prejudice). It's also the fact that these parents are boomers, and they don't like the idea of their kids "sellin' out to DA MAN!"

My husband has run into that and I've heard other recruiters tell stories of white middle class kids not telling their parents they had joined till the day they shipped out because their parents were not crazy about the idea.

I see it a lot. Some of the neighbor kids know that I'm ex-USMC, and they ask me what it's like, and it usually comes up that their parents don't think much of Marines.

My husband has even had a mother tell him that their son did not need the Army because they had plenty of money.

As can be seen from the article, leftists do not join the military, because they're too involved in "queer studies."

Leftism isn't genetic, believe it or not =:o)

When you put your life on the line for something, you have to love it. The Left doesn't have the love of country.

These folks have chosen a tough way to EARN a place here. I respect that, and I am all in favor of it. I'd rather they learn the values taught by the military than the ones that Mr. Garcia would have them learn.

I have a cousin who joined the Marines, and he isn't even a citizen yet. He came here from the Phillipines less than three years ago, and now he's helping protect his new country. With this and other relatives who have served, including one great uncle who died during the Bataan Death March, it offends me even more when ungrateful Leftists bash our military. If you don't like here, GO SOMEPLACE ELSE!

Holy cow. That article really reads like parody.

"We Chicanos don't need no steenkin' military. We need queer stud-eees, and maw welfare. And we need a few more bafrooms in da school. They prey-eeeng on us with dere offers of jobs and stooopid college etcha-ca-shuns."

The liberal mindset is pathetic.

At worst they come out with a trade skill, some discipline and the ability to speak English.

"No Comprendo Drill Sergeant," does not go over well.

Personally I think that two years in the military should be mandatory for citizenship.

Interesting that you mention the citizenship thing..... I was unaware of that provision

IMMIGRATION - MILITARY SERVICE

Just as failure to abide by the Selective Service laws can result in a denial of future benefits, performing military service can produce benefits. People who have served for a total of three years in the US military and who, if no longer in the military, were honorably discharged, are exempted from standard residency requirements if the naturalization application is filed while still in the military or within six months of discharge.

If they ever figure out how to make a fresh carne asada quesadilla in an MRE container, I'd go for it...
